> Many areas of high deprivation have also received large payouts. Copeland and Barrow-in-Furness, which are both among the most deprived 40% of councils nationally, will receive more than £600 a head – the largest per capita awards.
It seems it’s quite a complex topic and possibly can’t just be simplified to a brief list.
Seems that in order to level up there needs to be something bigger at play.
Maybe postcodes in the south could have an increase in Corporation or Income Tax and a correspoding drop in the North
What other gaming parlance are politicians going to appropriate to try and grab the young I wonder?
“1v1 me bro”
Anyone surprised since it’s in the public eye once again that local funding is held at ransom in exchange for deference? Obviously Labour areas will suffer under Tories and obviously areas with a ‘rogue’ Tory MP will suffer.
And on a related note, Gove says the House of Lords should move to Glasgow or York for a while.. He clearly thinks they represent northern towns!
Spend a year in Blackpool, Preston or Bradford for a year, that’ll give a much better idea of what northern inequality’s really like.
I suspect those who have seen little in the way of funds will see more once they vote Tory in greater numbers. Levelling up funds are more of a bribe than anything: you get more when you do as the Tories want. It’s not about helping the poor, it is about dangling a carrot over their head in exchange for giving the Tories more power and control.
If it wasn’t obvious to some voters in England now that there has always been a very particular deal when it comes to funding then god help you.
It’s like two different countries down there.
Same on this side of the Atlantic. “Them as has, gets.” So it goes.
I don’t know its its intentional, or just being thick, but this idea that “the north” is one homogeneous blob is bizarre.
Lots of governments seem to think that giving money to eg Leeds and Manchester (already relatively wealthy areas) helps all of West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. Its not necessarily the case that this money will filter out and help Wakefield or Burnley, who need it more than the big cities.
And again, just giving money to Leeds and Manchester, there’s huge inequalities in those places.
My constituency is solidly labour, has been for decades. Pretty run down. No levelling up money.
Next constituency over is a swing seat, tory held since 2011. Not exactly affluent, but much better off than mine. They *do* get levelling up cash 🤔
This isn’t surprising at all. The North of England is effectively another Country to the South when you compare standards of living.
Tories in a nutshell, coerce the lowest working class areas that Labour are awful for their community financially use that as a bargaining chip to get a few seats if they do flip then when they do just abandon those communities immediately and give them fuck all.
In Boris Johnson’s defence, once areas of the country have *levelled up*, everyone will have to pay a £49.99 DLC tax to access “new” services such as buses^^max , Ultrabin collections and NHS^^Plus and endgame raids like “walking anywhere in Inner London without being mugged and stabbed”
those fees will then be put towards a MASSIVE party ~~at 10 downing street~~ for the Queen’s Jubilee
I keep saying this, over and over, he doesn’t give a shit about us, he never has, never will, he only cares about leveling up the richest mates of his.
Do basically the South gets more money than the North.
