An Air Force serviceman shot down a Russian cruise missile with a machine gun.

This was reported by the press service of the Air Force Command.

"Shooting down an enemy missile with a machine gun is an extremely difficult task. But the responsibility and understanding that the lives of many people depend on you make it impossible," says Serhii, nicknamed "Doctor Mom".

In civilian life, Serhiy worked as a medic, and now he is on combat duty as part of a mobile air defence fire team.

The soldier recalls how, on the morning of 12 June, his unit intercepted an enemy missile heading for Kyiv region.
"After receiving the 'ready' command, I and my comrades immediately went to the position. We were informed over the radio that our target was close. A few seconds later, we saw an enemy missile flying towards Vasylkiv. Without hesitation, I took my machine gun and opened fire on the target. There was only one thing on my mind – I had to hit it! When I fired a round from my machine gun, I saw that the missile began to deviate from its course and descend," the soldier recalls.

Serhiy admits that at that moment he was overwhelmed with emotion. He believed that he had actually shot down an enemy missile with his machine gun only when he saw the wreckage with his own eyes.

The type of weapon that destroyed the cruise missile was not reported, but the standard armament and characteristic holes indicate that it could have been a light machine gun.

  2. You know normally I would be sceptical of such a claim, but there was video last year of a cruise missile being taken down by (I think) a 50 cal “ma deuce”, so I wouldn’t put it past the Ukrainians. I wish I had saved that video, it was insane

  5. The bullet holes are quite small and he’s holding an RPK-74 that shoots 5.45×39

    Technically it is a light machine gun, but to be fair it’s just regular AK-74 with longer barrel
