11. Why not national service for everyone? If not fit and young they can do their service in office jobs. Get rid of the private sector benefit checkers and use middle aged national service workers. There’s tons of government offices that would benefit from tea service provided by the middle aged. Heck even just picking up litter… anyone of any age can do that.

    National Service means **service**. No need to go all Hitler youth with it.

31. Sunak looks like the type of guy who would dodge it using some legal loophole and brag about it to his mates.

32. A lot of people think it is military service. It is not, there will be a small number of places for the forces (30000ish) with the main goal of those being for people who want to enlist anyway.

    It’s basically one weekend a month of community service for the vast majority.

    The cost of administrative work for this will be massive, the amount of work done very little. Imagine you have a group of disinterested teenagers one weekend a month to try to get to do something. About all you could get them to do it litter picking or painting a fence.

    It’s a huge lie that somehow it will be useful for people and more accurate to say it’s a complete waste of time and money. The risk assessments for tasks, the people organizing who does what, on site staff etc.

    Misinformed people think it’s boot camp that will give kids discipline. It will do none of that. It’s a colossal waste that old people (who never did national service ) think of with rose tinted glasses as a sensible idea.

    You can’t spend decades burning out the core of a nation, and then demand that the youth fight to protect the ashes.

34. You have to understand who he is aiming this at. It’s at the demographic voting for Reform, namely angry, permanently online retirees who blame the kids for everything from not being able to say racist things and the fact that the world is different to what it was like when they grew up.
