Dubliners facing higher property tax under council parties’ pact

  1. More money for council services.  Does it strike anyone as odd that the provision of more services for less tax, often touted by populist or economically conservative parties, is being offerd by a progressive alliance of SF SD PBP?

  2. Dublin City Council might be able to afford an extra public bin from the money

  3. Labour and the Greens are the only serious left wing parties. SF and the SDs are populists. In SFs case you can understand as their only real aim is a UI so any principle can be dropped to win a few more votes. Less clear why the Soc Dems are going this route.

  4. One of the most regressive taxes we have. Of course labour wants to raise it. They love raising taxes on ordinary people.

  5. I wish that article spelled out which services they mean. Lumping it all together seems too vague to be convincing – even if the details would be.

This motion, which was defeated, would have resulted in higher bills for homeowners this year but, the parties said, would have resulted in much improved services for Dubliners.

  6. I’m ok with providing slightly more money for council services, however the councils have to be very clear on where this money is being spent. If it just disappears into management salaries or administration costs it’s yet another tax increase with poor services on the back of it.

  7. While I agree with the LPT, at the end of the day it contributes to a small fraction of the council budget overall. It’s not really a case of more tax=more services as some are making out. I still think it should be raised-which is more than FFG believe.

Instead, Labour are trusting FFG to run the services better than an alternative progressive alliance would. Which is very questionable.
