Rented accommodation beside a brand new mega college campus!?
Sorry 3 bed semis for students who have to travel from Dundalk instead
>Sinn Féin Cllr Janice Boylan said build to rent was a “fundamentally flawed model” and would do nothing to sustain the local community.
>“The height and scale of this development in the area it’s in, it is just absolutely monstrous,” she said. “It literally is like a madman drew the plans and it’s just disgraceful.”
lmfao
I live in this area and this is a very busy main road and the site being developed is a dump. You’d swear from the way these deeply dishonest people are talking that it’s a quaint seaside village.
If building more housing also has the bonus of driving our awful city councillors insane then all the better.
This is what needs to change. Want a family home where you’re from in Stillorgan? I’ve rented a 3 bed house there once upon a time with a few mates, I’m positive it’s still rented to a group of lads today. We wanted to live in the city centre, but straight up, for a city of over a million people, there aren’t enough apartments in the city centre where young professionals want to live. We didn’t want to rent a family home in Stillorgan! (Or Harold’s Cross or Drumcondra, I lived in a lot of family homes in the suburbs). Rent and house buying are connected.
Dublin City Council need to cop on and recognise that a city of her size desperately needs higher density housing at her centre because its absolutely disrupting the market and everytime a cherished parent passes away in the family 3 bed in Lucan, along comes a kid of theirs who decides they may as well rent it for 3 grand a month because there’s still hordes of folk who need a bed near Dublin city centre and are desperate because of the shortages.
>Sinn Féin Cllr Janice Boylan said build to rent was a “fundamentally flawed model”
Rental accommodation beside a college? My god, what monster would consider such insanity………
Ah here
Labour and SF as usual being completely counterproductive to national development. Is there a single party in this country who arent self-serving short-sighted arseholes? Look at the state of this area now. Would drive anyone insane this selfish carry on
When built no student will be able to afford renting in that place and you know it.
Can’t have apartments next to a college campus or 10 minutes walk to the city centre absolute madness. Young professionals clearly want a to rent a house share out in Ratoath, Lucan etc with 3 other people away from work, pubs, sporting events, restaurants, niteclubs etc.
What kind of journalism is this that they don’t even include a pictures of the planned “monstrous” building?
Could it be that the Irish Times would rather let us assume the worst than actually see the plan due to their own views on BTR in the city…..
13 stories isn’t even that high.
This country’s refusal to build anything higher than a couple of stories is infuriating to no end.
Ah yes, Prussia street and its historic derelict shopfronts straight out of 1910. Can’t be having them go away.
I’m Irish and currently living in Switzerland. I’ve a 3 bed apartment that’s the same square footage as a 3 bed semi in Dublin. I live 10 minutes walk to anything/everything, I’ve a decent balcony which is plenty for me. We’ve parking and a storage unit. That’s bog standard here.
I live in a buidling with 20 other families in the footprint of probably 3 semi’s in Dublin and it works really well.
If I could get this in Dublin I’d be delighted instead I’ll have to move 30+ minutes away from the city, be another person filling up public transport/driving to work every day. Oh and the house I’d like to buy is probably currently rented out to a bunch of young adults who’d much prefer an affordable one or two bed apartment.
There is absolutely no logic in these planning decisions.
How did I know Sinn Fein would be in the middle rejecting it.
Just fucking build it!
To anyone whose whining: shut the fuck up! It’s desparately needed
Jesus the FFG shills are out today!
Typical local authority, parish pump style approach. This is a perfect development for young professionals on a site that is a dump at the moment. Stoneybatter/Smithfield is a great area for people without families that want to rent with a couple of friends and be close to the city/work. It isn’t the type of development intended for families by and large
At least two other developers have a development on that street which is in breach of fire safety standards, with only one set of stairs when developments >20M are supposed to have 2 sets of stairs and a dedicated fire lift.
Good article on the general problem with high rise standards, here:
The fast track planning process is being used to bypass safety standards. If they want to build high rise, they have to fucking build it safely and to a good standard.
Any councillors or td who is against this type of building and talks about how the housing crisis is a problem and we need to do something needs to be removed from government.
We are in desperate need for any housing, apartments.
We cannot build cities outwards and wait on inadequate transport systems or drive everywhere.
It’s mental how they keep objecting to building apartments on the basis that they look out of place on account of lack of other apartment buildings.
Honestly the people who object to these should be required to propose a cheaper solution that has the same potential head count within 30 days or be charged for the time they take up.
In Dublin 1 and 2 there should be no limit on building height.
It’s no good having a nice view in the city if no one can afford to live there to enjoy it
Jesus CHRIST almighty! Is Dublin a city or a bloody heritage site??
13 stories? Monstrous? We’re an absolute JOKE of a country!
Is it too much to ask for ANYONE in the government to grow a pair and introduce legislation that will look out for the greater good?
This selfish NIMBYism is just getting too much.
13 storey’s isn’t high enough in the city centre.
It’s comical what is allowed happen.
13 stories high? monstrous! so we should only be building bungalows in the city next to a college campus 😂 forgive me if i insult anyone but i found prussia street to be a bit scaldy and a lot of places were boarded up and abandoned. it needs a good rejuvenating kick up the ass and building 3 bed semis wont do that.
“Not that, not here, otherwise I’m outraged the housing crisis hasn’t been fixed yet.”
I AM LITERALLY GOING INSANE, all these stories of cunt NIMBYs blocking generations out of Irish housing. It’s time to tell your parents if they live in these areas to cop tf on for their kids sakes!!

Why is it [always Janice Boylan](https://www.irishtimes.com/topics/topics-7.1213540?article=true&tag_person=Janice+Boylan)?
