My wifes grandad was an ametuer boxer in thr 30s and 40s. He won gold at the last ever British Empire Games in Australia 1938. Recently we cleared out her uncles loft and came accross her grandads boxing stuff. In it were his medals and a leather suitcase containing mint condition 86 year old gloves and tracksuit. It was amazing to look through.

  1. Looks like a nice fleece top. Could wear that these days to the Euros.

  2. That’s bloody awesome.

Post it on r/boxing, they’d get a kick out of it there too.

  3. Got to be tempting to run up some local municipal steps and celebrate Rocky style in it.

Or see if a museum is interested.

  4. I wonder if my sports day participation awards will be worth something one day, probably not..

  5. Legit one of the coolest things I’ve seen on this site

  6. I really think you should donate these to a museum or a local boxing club to display because it’s so god damn cool.

  7. My grandad used to talk a lot about these games (was a boxer too, but not to *that* standard).

They brought it back in 1950 (he was mates with the light heavyweight champ of it, might be misremembering), but I’m not sure if that counts as the last one as there was such a gap.

Anyway, stuff like this is amazing and so easy to get lost in the warp of time.

Treasure the items, they truly are one of a kind.

  8. British empire games! 😳
Sounds like the brits put the games on. The colonies were forced to participate at Lee Enfield point and let the brits win 😂

  9. The British Empire Games are now known as the Commonwealth Games. 1938 was the last held before WW2, 1942 and 1946 were cancelled before resuming in 1950.

  10. Cool post! Gotta post it on r/boxing, they’d love to hear about this.

  11. Jesus I hope he never gave you poor grandmother a good thumbing
