> Apple Inc. is withholding a raft of new technologies from hundreds of millions of consumers in the European Union, citing concerns posed by the bloc’s regulatory attempts to rein in Big Tech.
The company announced Friday it would block the release of Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing from users in the EU this year, because the Digital Markets Act allegedly forces it to downgrade the security of its products and services.
“We are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security,” Apple said in a statement.
Under the DMA, Apple is expected to receive a formal warning from EU regulators over how it allegedly blocks apps from steering users to cheaper subscription deals on the web — a practice for which it received a €1.8 billion ($1.9 billion) fine from Brussels regulators earlier this year.
The EU’s DMA forces Big Tech platforms to abide by a raft of dos and don’ts. Tech services are prohibited from favoring their own over those of rivals. They’re barred from combining personal data across their different services, blocked from using data they collect from third-party merchants to compete against them, and have to allow users to download apps from rivals platforms.
That is a warning bell to me that whatever they have planned is not yet fit for the public…
A good thing.
One of the biggest losses in the past two decades was that Europe just rolled back and did not establish their own tech sector. No apple, Google, Youtube, Meta….you name it.
With the AI revolution, setting the challenges for foreign companies to such a high degree that they do not offer their services here may be seen as a negative at first, but it allows homegrown alternatives to be cultivated without the dooming knowledge that trillion dollar pushed alternatives are already every present.
The EU missed one of the biggest revolutions in the world ever since 07 with the companies who make those up now dominatung the market, us and the EUs independence.
With acting decisively in this new field (as well as the Greentech, which the EU also seems to make some progress) we may be able to just barely not fall behind once again.
Like we unquestionable already have.
Hah! Now I’m feeling better since my 14 Pro wouldn’t get it anyway xD

It’s not just Apple. Google Pixel devices come with a lot of software features (many powered by AI) that are aggressively advertised, but unavailable in the EU and many other countries, sometimes due to language constraints, often for regulatory reasons. Advanced call screening is the most notable example. Car crash and fall detection work in some EU countries, but not others.
You never know what exactly you are getting.
Oh no, I really wanted more techno surveillance.
I really like the idea of 100% unaccountable, unregulated and tax dodging US billionaires can know absolutely everything about me to a point where the algorithms can anticipate and even alter my behavior or opinions by controlling information sphere, and then utilize that power to either sell it to foreign adversary powers like Russia, and most importantly attempt to make me buy useless shit with the most targeted and invasive marketing ever seen. And lets not forget their great contributions when it comes to causing genocide in Asia, and how they have successfully turned US into a complete fucking mess. These people are now building bunkers for themselves lmao.
And still people will come into these thread and beg for them not to be regulated, because everything has been so great with them regulating themselves, and if anything Washington should get off their ass too, but unfortunately they are usually completely worthless when it comes to standing up to giga corps in any way, which is kinda odd for an institution that is supposedly there to represent public interests.
All I want is Siri that isn’t useless
I’m hoping the UK will get it as we left the EU but are in Europe. Anyone got any ideas?
Great, ty EU.
Bravo EU lawmakers, another technology successfully regulated.
Europe will be left behind with AI, yet again
All these AI features suck ass anyway, so no skin off my back
“Regulatory concerns” – laughable way of saying
“Our tech violates people’s rights so we’ll not be bringing it to YOUR COUNTRIES”
EU going overboard with regulation will just hurt itself in the long term. Now I’m not suggesting they just copy what the US or China is doing but they need to do more to find a middle ground between regulating the life out of things and and taking a hands off everything goes approach.
Tech industry PR is spinning .
You can just get the chat gpt app, and it’s better stop bullshiting
Another big EU regulations L
Didn’t Samsung roll out a lot of AI features as well in their most recent phones? Those are available in the EU. I am not informed enough on how different the features are between Galaxy and Apple, but they can’t be worlds apart, right?
oh no
anyway
This is kinda sad, I was looking forward to it. I don’t get why some of these features have to be open to third parties like iPhone mirroring, who else would have to do the mirroring? And with baked in Apple intelligence why can’t Apple do that with their own devices? Can’t they make it opt-in?
wtf
Can you just buy an USA phone and take it to Europe?
Oh, thank god actually. That’s enough of AI bs
Will UK get it?
EU just licking it’s lips to regulate. Come to papa
I’m glad Europe is legislating **before** things get out of hand with new technologies.
It’s not a bad thing to test for safety first before roll out something new to **all** European consumers at once.
Fuck big companies and fuck AI
Say you’re doing something shady without saying you’re doing something shady.
I was holding up to buy a new iPhone with the required chip to access AI since I use copilot so much at work for everything and I love it. But in this case I probably won’t upgrade or move away from Apple perhaps…
Reaction by a lot of people, including in this very thread: “Damn you, Apple, give us them features, that we think are going to steal our data, and for which we want the EU to assf*ck you to your death!!!”
How is iPhone mirroring affected? Its just better handoff that we have for years already
Wasn’t that interested in to begin with, most of the AI features they announced were gimmicks anyway.
