Actually the original name in italy was something along the line of tomatica (It’s still tumatis in my dialect) a random guy renamed them pomodori (Golden apples) to make them more attractive and convince the boomers of his generation to eat them

Cause [italian botanic Mattioli](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pietro_Andrea_Mattioli) describe it as “mala aurea” in Latin and “pomo d’oro” (golden apple) in Italian, cause the first tomatoes in Europe were the yellow ones. If I recall right the name stuck with red ones cause they were considered decorative and were highly priced so the name still fitted
