Failed to understand this pun at Dunelm as I read it in my northern accent and essentially said (out loud) “what’s a spaff-room?”

  1. Where, upon north, does the in the middle of a word become ff? I hear it darn sarff all the time, but up north too? Good god.

  2. Haha

Reminds me of a similar problem I had when reading a book to my kids that rhymed “scarf” and “giraffe”. I couldn’t work it out until I imagined it in a southern accent #northernErasure

  3. I literally could not figure it out until I read the comments here, what an inane portmanteau. (Also pronounced it spaff-room in me head because I have a Scottish accent lol.)

  4. I’m from Derby and I read it like you did too.

  5. Space and bathroom combined, who doesn’t like a little space now and then.

  6. My wife and I both say barth, and both failed to get the pun at first. It makes no sense!

  7. These craft beer tap badges are getting rather obscure these days…

  8. Getting the phonics underneath just didn’t help either.

    Surely it should be:

    [Spar-th-room]

Absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. Southerner here and I read it as spath-room, like bath-room but with extra sp.

  9. Do people who pronounce bath as bah-th also pronounce bathroom as bah-throom? You live and learn

  10. I’m picturing a British remake of 50 Shades of Grey, with Jon Richardson as Christian saying ‘I have a spaff room, do you want to see?’

  11. I’m a Southerner and I still read it the same way

I would appear someone in their marketing department acted like 90% of the people we know in marketing departments and told literally no one about their idea until it was too late

Like the time we offered free meat as a sales incentive despite (somewhat obviously) some of the individuals being vegan or vegetarian

  12. I thought it was a portmanteau of Space and Bathroom going by the description given.

  13. I enjoy how the pronunciation guide is absolutely no help at all.

Spathroom. Pronounced spath-room. Yea, thanks for that

  14. I imagine if you’d been able to read it correctly you wouldn’t have conjured up two fs from nowhere.

  15. Had to google this…im not “relevant anymore” but turns out, my old house, the bathroom there would of been a Spathroom. The bath definitely counted being a spa bath. Our son baths in the bath but for me and the wife it’s a glorified shower tray. And isnt as nice as our old place. Nothing here is as good or as nice as our place…i wish we didn’t move. As you can tell, this post is bringing up repressed memories of a happier time. Fuck you reddit 😂

  16. My whole house if a Spathroom. It’s one of the many joys of not having kids.

  17. Also Northern and had to read the comments to get it…
