  1. The Irish are going to really hate hearing this, but it’s true.

    When they faced a financial crisis, I supported helping them, because that’s what solidarity is for.

    In retrospect, I think I may have been wrong. I noticed Ireland strongly opposed any attempt at the EU level to avoid a race to the bottom in taxation. The Irish Commission on Privacy sabotaged the enforcement of fines against tech giants. They refused to spend a dime on NATO.

    They really couldn’t care less about other Europeans.

  4. The Irish are sabotaging all our taxation by allowing the transnational companies such low taxes that are laughably low. These companies can then use tax-dodging loopholes specifically created for them by Ireland to not pay much taxes in states from where they actually earn most of their revenue.

  5. There is no such thing as a “neutral country”, never has and never will be. There are only countries blessed with buffer zones between them and hostile nations.

  10. Honestly, what has Ireland been spending the money it has been saving on?

    Is their government spending the money on some grand project instead or just tax break for everybody?

  11. Living here for a decade now, joke of a nation really.
    – Transportation system tries to mimic the ones in the UK minus the working train an underground lines. Go figure.
    – Health Services is blind carbon copy of the UK one including the issues with it plus we manage to create new ones with over regulating it.
    – Property market detto ~ shit quality moldy properties going for EUR half a million simply because the landlord classes decided that we do not need new housing anymore as it would impact existing property prices. Problem imported form the UK again. We could look at ways to fix this in other EU countries but there’s 0 political will to do that.

    Given al that is anybody surprised that the Irish expects others to patrol their waters in case of a war or other type of emergencies? I’m not.

  12. This is true but to be fair to Ireland, they haven’t got much to worry about. No point investing in defence when your neighbour is a nuclear power who has a massive strategic interest in defending you.

  16. So much propaganda bashing Ireland’s neutrality. No. The global military industrial complex causes enough suffering. We’ve nothing to gain from paying more money towards war profiteers.

    Ask any Irish person if we should join NATO. They’ll give you a resounding “no”. It’s ridiculous to propose our involvement.

  17. The Irish have been part of the UK armed forces for a long time. A big part in many cases. No reason why that would stop in the event of a conflict

    Also Spain and Portugal?

    These countries could drop off NATO and they would still be safe

    Even the US, they could quit NATO, terminate all her alliances, halve its defense spending and no country would attemp to cross the oceans to go to war with them
