Defeat features strongly in that thousand years of Russian history.
End it? When there’s another thousand years of *reminding* them about it!?
> Radosław Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, has said Vladimir Putin “over worries” about Russia disintegrating after the Russian leader claimed that defeat in Ukraine would mean “losing 1,000 years of Russian statehood”.
> Sikorski was responding to a speech made by Putin on a visit to North Korea in which he argued that a Ukrainian victory could bring down the curtain on Russia.
> Strategic defeat, he claimed, would mean the end of Russian “statehood”.
> “It means the end of a 1,000 year history of the Russian state. I think that is clear to everyone,” he added.
> Taking a swipe at the Russian president, Sikorski also pointed out that Putin was incorrect on a fundamental fact of Russia’s history.
> “Vladimir Putin is worried that his defeat in Ukraine will mark the end of 1,000 years of Russian statehood,” Sikorski wrote on X. “But these fears are exaggerated. Firstly, Moscow was only founded in 1147.”
> He added that Russia survived defeats in the Crimean War, the Russo-Japanese War at the beginning of the 20th century, World War I, the Polish-Soviet war in 1920, Afghanistan, and in the Cold War.
> “After empires, national states can continue to exist,” Sikorski continued.
Maybe if Putey Poots concentrated on things other than dominating and conquering neighbors and manipulating the West (and East) he could forstall the *end* of Russian history.
The only thing a Russian defeat in Ukraine will end is Putin himself, and he knows it.
Wow, I guess Russia is even weaker than it looks, if failing in a shitty land grab means the end of the country
No, Russia existed prior to Mr Putin. It will continue doing so well after him. Mr Putins’ fate as an individual however is like that of any other human. Regardless of the outcomes of the war
Putin puts his ego above the state. History only provides the script for this. But the people seem to be waiting patiently for a worthy successor.
It’s his own fault
The world would of left Russia alone if Putin wasn’t such a terroristic coward of a dictator
See what I mean?! Even other leaders gotta say “bro russias gonna be fine if you lose this war, wtf are you on about?”
I AM THE STATE
If Russian is losing this war it’s clear that they shouldn’t be left to govern themselves again. And I say this as a German, lol. (Really hope our “fortified democracy” will held up against this Nazi AfD shit, not looking good so far….)
Russia will just fall back to this oligarch shit again, like last time and the times before, there need to be outside intervention to break the cycle
1000 proud years of oppression, looting of their neighbor countries and their own people. 1000 years of Famines and poverty. 1000 proud years of wanting to be a world power and not succeeding
pootin has already had re-written [russian history re-written](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-aide-rewrites-russian-history-society-war-2023-08-10/), so what difference does russia’s next defeat make.
If he’s that bothered, just ask one of his dictator pals to rename some hovel to poo-tin-stain, and pretend it was russian all the time.
Bitch Putin is scared of losing face. He lost any illusion of strength a long time ago.
There are certain words and terms that scream “Hey, look I am a Nazi/Fascist.”. “1000 year reich” is one of them.
I’m gona be uncomfortably real and say that the ‘1000 years of history’ thing isn’t something Putin actually believes.
His issue is that a defeat would look very bad for *Vladimir Putin.*
The crybaby dictator is just trying to save his own skin by associating the existence of Russia with his own. Russia existed just fine before invading Ukraine and can exist just fine leaving it entirely, returning their people, and paying for the damages.
I, and I’m sure everyone living close to russia will agree, don’t see a problem with putin’s fears coming true
Is Putin framing it like this because the Russian nuclear doctrine states that nuclear weapons may only be used if Russia faces existential threat?.
In other news, the sky is blue and grass is green.
Putin says shit like this to scare his own uneducated people into supporting the pointless war in Ukraine.
Anyone who’s educated and has read a book about Russian history, which I’m sure Putin has given his propensity to lecture people about Russia’s past, knows the country has been through worse. The first half of the 20th century alone was filled with an never-ending series of wars and famines in Russia, from the 1917-1923 Civil War up to the Siege of Leningrad.
Putin isn’t worried that Russia, as a country, will cease to exist. He is worried that Russia, as a “superpower”, will cease to exist.
The irony being that he has gone and done exactly that. All soft power influence Russia had on Europe is gone and quickly evaporating in Asia. Not to mention the increasing dependence on China.
My fear is that he is trying to convince his population that going nuclear is the only option & justified. He knows he is fucked & history will deride him as a psychopathic loser so he wants 100m Ruzzians to go along with a sort of sick suicide pact.
Putler is doing everything he can to make it happen.
Well they’ll see this statement as a threat too
Polish FM Sikorski says Putin ~~‘over worries’ about possible defeat ending 1,000 years of Russia history~~ is a lying, whiny little bitch
Putin isn’t actually worried about it, he’s actively trying to tie Russian survival to his war of conquest. Almost everyone knows Russia and the Russian people will survive this, but if he can convince Russians that the only way for Russia as a nation to survive is by conquering its neighbors he will be able to extract as many men and resources as he wants for his imperial ambitions.
What a friggin’ whacko.
Return to the 1200’s Muscovy Principality borders is not an end of their history.
More like historical justice.
Putin sees himself as a Czar. The great Czars legacy is built around military conquest or achievement. His interest in the history of imperial Russia is well known. Polish FM kicking him in the nuts here
