Received this letter today. Didn’t know you could still use BEF stamps!

  1. Yep.

  2. I get a lot of mail due to one of my hobbies. Let me tell you, the weird things you see over the years that pass as a stamp or are just written on the envelope could fill a decent sized book.

    -Hand drawn stamps
-Just a written number instead of a stamp
-A regular sized envelope with over 15 stamps on it
    -Personal messages to me
-Personal messages to the postal office
    -Transparent envelopes
-Opened up envelopes with their contents fully intact
-Envelopes that have never been sealed in the first place…

-Oh and one time I’ve received a letter from Sweden with Swiss and Danish stamps on it

There is something about sending a simple letter that is very very difficult for people.

  3. Hey, that post stamp about the international philatelic exhibition contains another stamp of King Albert, which has been designed by my great-great-uncle and tutor of my grandfather.

  4. I recently received a letter with BEF stamps on it as well! Apparently they can still be used as long as they’re from after 2 October 1961

  5. Jep and collectors regularly sell less desirable stamps below printed value. So if you send Christmas cards this is the cheapest way.

  6. Hah, I’ve been doing this a lot with my Christmas and New Year cards this year. Purchased some sheets of Belgian comic book stamps in a local stamp shop in Ghent.

The employees at the post office hate me, because they have to take the time to convert the Belgian Francs to EUR. They grumpily told me I won’t be able to do this anymore after 2028.

It’s my revenge because they sold me postcards in the postoffice that cost 5 euro or something to send. ”Because it’s a strange format”, was the explanation. They are sold in the post office, ffs. When I told them I purchased them there, so what’s the ballony about it being a “strange format” they just said “well, we can sell what we want”. I spent something like 200 EUR to send a bunch of cards. Next year I’m printing my own cards with whatever default format costs least to send.

    – rant complete –

  7. Does anyone know where to buy stamps like these for a reasonable price? Avid postcrosser here, and back when I lived in the Netherlands I used to buy old stamps online on a well known website, but haven’t found its equal yet in Belgium.

  8. This pops up here from time to time. Many Bol/Tweedehands/… (re)sellers that used to be in philately are dumping their now worthless collections before they become obsolete.
