Opinion: Germany needs to invest in nature to defend against floods

  1. The kind of issues that contribute to floods – like straightening rivers, “reclaiming” land by building dykes to be able to build closer to the river and so on, which decreases the space for floodwater – are hard and time-consuming to undo.

So I agree with you – it’s something that needs fixing – but it’s easier said than done.

  2. Not a friend of defensive stances in general. Protecting nature is moot, we’re long past that point and need to accept that. Think bigger. #RECLAIMDOGGERLAND

Not even sure anymore, if there should be a /s or not.

  3. Wenn it pours >100l/m2 in less when 6 hours… you´re fucked anywhere in the work.
Doesnt matter if you have wetlands forest or an paved parking lot, water goes downhill and will add up.

    overall an kinda BS article,

    >The land around the Eifel has been extensively drained, making it more vulnerable to flooding under one picture..

What? Drainage takes away too much water so the soil can store water… and in the Eifel..
nobody drains big plots, since its all hilly anyway, and there is no big agriculture that need drainage.

And dont forget, all the villages and citys were built next to the rivers ages ago, since it was convinient for them to have access to the water. And you cant move them all.

  4. Ooooooor… we could invest in highly erosive measures to squeeze the last bit of coal out of the dirt. Basically the same thing!
