AUkrainian fencer refused to shake her Russian opponent’s hand after they faced each other at the European Fencing Championships in Switzerland on Tuesday, leading the Russian athlete to unleash a profanity-filled tirade. Ukrainian Olena Kryvytska was fencing against Russian Maya Guchmazova, who was competing under the flag of Georgia at the competition in Basel. Kryvytska beat her opponent 15:9 in their competition and then refused to shake hands with Guchmazova. The European Fencing Confederation, like many international athletic bodies, banned athletes from Russia and Belarus after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. #russia #Ukraine #war

  15. Georgian fencer Maya Guchmazova (She has Russian citizenship and trains in Russia) demanded that her Ukrainian rivals not participate in international competitions during the war. The Russian woman, who changed her sports citizenship in 2017 but continues to train in her native Vladikavkaz, threw a tantrum after Ukrainian Olena Kryvytska refused to shake her hand at the European Championships in Basel. Maya Guchmazova is being disciplined for her foul language at the competition.

    Most Russians just don't seem to understand that Russia was the aggressor against Ukraine, not the other way around. Ukrainians are competing outside their country because Ukraine is in a state of war where the Russian military is targeting civilian targets.

  28. Politics is one thing, sports is quite another. Win or lose, not shaking your opponents hand after a match is poor sportsmanship. She shouldn`t be in sports to begin with if she`s undisciplined and incapable of keeping her emotions in check.
    If that Ukrainian fencer wants to be mad at someone, she should be mad at the coked out dictator and clown who provoked a war he knew he cannot win and is throwing young men and women and soon will be throwing teenagers into the furnace of war to appease his US puppeteers while him and cohorts are amassing a considerable fortune overseas.
