French voter turnout rate was ‘just above 19 percent’ at midday in 2019 European elections

hi Will so I’m just outside the ministry of the interior in central Paris and we are expecting a midday announcement of the voter turnout across the country so far now of course this figure will change throughout the afternoon before the official results uh tonight uh but if we look back at 5 years ago during the 2019 European uh Parliament elections uh the voter overall voter turnout in France was 50.2% um and this time 5 years ago at midday it was just above 19% so in the morning of voting day uh the participation rate tends to be low of course this will vary from town to Town neighborhood to Neighborhood depending on the voter demographics for example this morning we were in the northern suburb of s and the local mayor there said the participation rate had only just surpassed 3% but then there will be other neighborhoods in central Paris where more people are coming to vote now we mustn’t forget we are a Sunday and a lot of Voters tend to come to the polling stations from midday onwards so the figure is likely to change but overall France as a country um has always had a voter turnout that’s slightly less than the average eu-wide voter turnout and the Paris region itself in 2014 and 2019 elections uh also had a relatively uh low uh participation rate so we’ll just have to see how uh the results play out but speaking to uh polling station staff uh they do not seem to um they seem quite doubtful that the voter turnout will be um any higher than it has been in the previous parliamentary elections

At this time – five years ago, at midday – it was just above 19%,” said Kaminov.
