L’Europe centrale plus exposée à la désinformation avant les élections européennes ? | euronews 🇫🇷

why is Central Europe at a heightened risk of fake news ahead of the European elections recent statistics show that at least half the population in countries such as Slovakia Poland and the Czech Republic are exposed to misinformation online in some cases people are coming across more fake than legitimate news the cube takes a closer look some 45% of the population of the Czech Republic was exposed to false Nar narratives in the first quarter of 2024 according to new figures from the central European digital media Observatory this number was even higher in Slovakia standing at about 58% the cedo said that in March slovakians reported encountering more misinformation than accurate news in fact this happened for the first time since August of last year a separate report by digital Poland suggests that up to 84% of polls have come across fake news with nine out of 10 respondents leaving at least one piece of false information the results show a dangerous Trend that is particularly alarming in the runup to the European elections central eastern Europe uh a region that previously belonged to the uh Soviet sphere of influence and and was uh part part of Comon and and had all uh communist uh Pro Soviet regimes so these are countries when where Russia simply has better networks and also politicians who are quite ready to spread Russian narratives and I do think that especially in slavy countries I think that there is a higher resonance to such kind of messages this isn’t just affecting Central Europeans we’re all now more susceptible to fake news because of the ways we passively absorb and digest media we’ve gone from Homo sapiens to homo ven humans who watch as were’re increasingly Glu to our screens but how can we change this first of all use reliable sources of information usually mainstream media instead of uh of uh rather than uh commentaries online for example media literacy education and fact checking are in my opinion the best solution for the thisinformation and can provide us the free choice during the European elections ultimately engagement and critical thinking are key is still still a good idea to use social media but in a way that’s sensible and backed up by reliable impartial news outlets so the best piece of advice is when you do see something do spend some time thinking about it
