Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned South Korea that it would be a “big mistake” to send lethal weapons to Ukraine. This statement was made following Seoul’s announcement that it was considering arming Ukraine in reaction to Russia and North Korea’s mutual defence pact signed on Wednesday. Although Putin stated that the defence treaty between the two states was of a “defensive nature,” South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol criticised the agreement, labelling it as “absurd.” South Korea has previously provided non-lethal aid to Kyiv, as the country is restricted by its Foreign Trade Act from exporting weapons except for “peaceful purposes.”
