As a Brit (and Viking descendent), I was surprised to learn the influence they had in Russia and the Byzantine Empire.
Those guys got everywhere.
I find this fascination with the vikings very strange. I mean when did you last see this kind of map about the huns or scithians? Or the Phoenicians?
I think they might be overrated in Anglo media because the vikings conquered England. Idk
There wasn’t any meaningful settlement in Pomerania as this map claims, certainly not so far down the Wisła river as it is marked here. Elbląg marked on the map didn’t even exist at the time yet, I think they meant Truso, there’s some evidence there might have been a short lived Viking settlement in that area.
Also the Vikings themselves were being regularly raided by Slavs. In XI and XII centuries it were the Slavic pirates that were dominating the South Baltic area. In 1043 Slavs sacked Hedeby and Aarhus. In 1134 Roskilde, at the time Danish capital has been sacked by Pomerianian Slavic king Ratibor. Some Danish islands like Møn, Lolland and Falster even became depopulated because of Slavic raids and some place names there have Slavic origin because of the Wendish settlement. The chronicler Snorri Sturluson tells of huge Pomeranian Slav raid on Konunghella (todays Kungälv in Sweden) in which more than 500 ships took part and the city has been sacked and destroyed.
Elbląg didn’t exist at the time
As an Englishman it hurts me to admit this, but Vikings genuinely bullied and conquered us all the time with the Danelaw, (Kingdom of Jorvik, Kingdom of Guthrum, the 5 Boroughs) and the North Sea Empire – not to mention constant raiding and pillaging.
Bloody Vikings, coming over here and plundering our stuff…
The word “Norse” is misused here. It should either be West-Norse or Norwegians, Norse refers to Norwegians, Danes and Swedes/Geats/Gutes combined. Also Swedes is misplaced over areas that were Sami/Norwegian at the time.
So people from Hedeby raided people from Hamburg? What about the other way around?
Not much of history is known about how Finns and vikings interacted together, Finns apparently traded furs with Vikings. Some written history also exists about the warfare between vikings and Finnish tribes. From the Saga of a norse chieftan Olaf Haraldson the battle of Heralder is described https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_at_Herdaler. Haraldson and his men landed near Heralder (southern Finland) however upon their arrival to the village/town, the locals had already mobilized their tribe into the forests. The vikings chased the Finns in hope of plunder, however the Finns ambushed the Vikings in the forests, killing some of their men and forcing the vikings to escape to their boats. The rough terrain of Finland and the hunter/belligrent/gatherer centric culture of Finnish tribes must have made Finland alot harder target to raid when compared to agricultural socities of center-Europe.
From my reading of Vikings, the raped and pillaged first, asked questions later.
Pretty sure the marked Viking attack in Preslav should not be considered as I think this refers to norse mercenary forces during the war with Kievan Rus. It’s not their attack, they’re participating in someone else’s attack. Big difference.
A lot of coping and seething in this thread.
On what the settlement in south Baltic coast is based?
Wolin was called Jomsborg by vikings and had a mixed slav and viking population so it should be red or some sort of other colour since I don’t think vikings settled it but lived there.
When are the nordic countries going to pay England compensation for the raids, murder and theft. I feel that I should at the least be given an XC90 and a waterfront apartment in Copenhagen. Oh and some cash please.
They also came to Piraeus, which is the Athenian port, since archeologists have found Runes there. I think we gave them to the Italians though.
Q: were there not peoples living in Greenland and further west? If so, why aren’t their ethnics groups written on the map? Is it due to a paucity of data regarding to their identities?
My great, great, great grand father was one of the last vikings alive. Even in his elderly, he could slice a tree in two with a single swing of his mighty axe 💪😎

There exists different runestones in Sweden which describe deaths of vikings from their attempted raids to Finland: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gs_13

You are lucky I was not born a Viking or both Rome and Constantinople would be Norse clay.
