So sad to see his term ending in September. He was extended twice which is almost unheard of in recent NATO history. You got to give him credit especially through the Trump years, many say he did a good job convincing Trump on NATO. Also, his speech to the U.S. congress was very good which eventually resulted in congress and the senate agreeing to ratify the NATO treaty, meaning no President can leave NATO without getting it through the Senate and congress first.
This is highly controversial in Norway. While Stoltenberg is qualified, the current administration consists of 2/3 of the same parties that governed when he was prime minister. Accusations of camaraderie etc. has been a huge part of the debates the last few months.
Further, another candidate, deputy governor (of the central bank) Ida Wolden Bache was, according to many, more qualified. Apart from being the deputy governor, she has spent a large part of her career at the central bank, and has higher academic qualifications (PhD) than Stoltenberg.
