I've been to Greece the last couple of days and have found some basketball courts in some weird places but this one is probably the weirdest one. We found it in the Vikos–Aoös national park where basically no one lives. The court even had a stand and a changing room. It there a story behind all these abandoned courts?

we just love ballin’ dude
After the 1987 Eurobasket where Greece beat the Soviet Union for the title, there was a huge push towards establishing basketball as a national sport which included the construction of numerous basketball courts. A lot of them are now abandoned.
It should be mentioned this initiative wasn’t a complete failure. Many kids got into basketball and led to an extremely talented team in the 00s. The Greek national basketball team won another Eurobasket title and during the 00s was 4th in FIBA rankings at some point (below US, Spain, and Argentina). Even now, some of the best Euroleague players are Greek (not to mention Giannis who grew up watching that 00s team).
