  1. They know Trump won’t step down, they want Biden to step down so someone else can beat Trump. Salon knew this and posted this dishonest article anyways. But it’s Salon so I can’t say I’m surprised with the dishonesty.

  2. This is absurd

They don’t ask Trump to step down because they know it won’t work but after that debate NYT knows them saying Biden should step aside can have a real impact

  3. The real title of the article is in the late paragraphs..

“But facts exist independent of their conjured reality and nothing can be done about that. Did Joe Biden screw the pooch? Yep. But so did Donald Trump. “

  4. What bullshit. They want Biden to step down because they don’t think he can win. They are not supporting Trump

  5. If a convicted felon can be president why can’t a corpse?

  6. They’re obviously not okay with Trump. They know Republicans and many voters are okay with Trump though. And they wouldn’t listen to an NYT call for Trump to drop out anyway. Democrats and voters are both concerned about Biden’s performance and will possibly listen to NYT, that’s why the editorial board focus this statement on him.

  7. The Times is bitter that Biden won’t give them an exclusive.

  8. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with the amount of articles here getting upvoted doing anything to place the blame off Biden. The guy looks awful and needs to go asap, Newsom would have wiped the floor with Trump.

  9. Damn Salon, read my Reddit postings lately ? The Media has normalized Trump’s atrocious behavior since 2016, at no point in the history of the Presidency has the media taken this parasitic relationship with a politician. Simultaneously normalizing them in able to criticize their incompetenance.

  10. The editorial from the New York Times 1) makes clear that they would unequivocally support Biden should he remain on the ballot in November, and 2) notes the ways in which what Trump has done is disqualifying.

The point that they make is that in an election with stakes as high as this one, we need a stronger candidate who has a better chance of defeating Donald Trump. While I think that Biden has been a good president, I agree that he severely damaged his image on Thursday and should step aside to maximize the chances of defeating Donald Trump.

  11. Ummmm they clearly state if you READ the editorial all the way that Biden is preferable to Trump. Fuck the GOP.

  12. “Meanwhile, Trump said he did nothing wrong”
Yes, I was very scared by this passage
I was speechless with a definitive distrust for men
So I understand why Biden froze
    And someone on redit wrote
“All I’m saying is, I hope y’all are stocking up on birth control.”
So I thought I could still trust America
    This is important
Yes, it’s not because of the president’s name or face
    You

  13. This is the second paragraph from the NYT opinion:

    >Donald Trump has proved himself to be a significant jeopardy to that democracy — an erratic and self-interested figure unworthy of the public trust. He systematically attempted to undermine the integrity of elections. His supporters have described, publicly, a 2025 agenda that would give him the power to carry out the most extreme of his promises and threats. If he is returned to office, he has vowed to be a different kind of president, unrestrained by the checks on power built into the American political system.

    It goes on to say:

    >If the race comes down to a choice between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden, the sitting president would be this board’s unequivocal pick. That is how much of a danger Mr. Trump poses.

    and:

    >To make a call for a new Democratic nominee this late in a campaign is a decision not taken lightly, but it reflects the scale and seriousness of Mr. Trump’s challenge to the values and institutions of this country and the inadequacy of Mr. Biden to confront him

    and:

    > Mr. Trump’s own performance ought to be regarded as disqualifying. He lied brazenly and repeatedly about his own actions, his record as president and his opponent. He described plans that would harm the American economy, undermine civil liberties and fray America’s relationships with other nations. He refused to promise that he would accept defeat, returning instead to the kind of rhetoric that incited the Jan. 6 attack on Congress.

Whether or not you agree with the editorial’s call for Biden to step aside the entire opinion shows they do not “seem OK with a convicted felon”

Furthermore, [this](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/30/opinion/trump-trial-guilty-felony.html) article from the same board a month ago in which it is made clear he should be nowhere near the nomination.

    Poor article from Salon.

  14. He’s so so much more than just a convicted felon. He doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.

His tariff plan will absolutely wreck our economy as will the huge tax breaks for billionaires.

People need to set aside their anger and realize who Trump truly supports and it ain’t them.

  15. Frankly, this subreddit is unhinged and completely disengaged with the reality we are living in. I am and always will be a card-carrying Democrat and I’ve voted for Biden in many elections, and will vote for him again in 2024 if he remains the nominee. That being said, it is impossible to ignore the evidence that is in front of our eyes after the last debate. He had difficulty putting basic sentences together. He should NOT be the nominee for president in 2024 and has absolutely no chance of beating Trump if he remains in the race – this should be clear to anyone with eyes. I come to this subreddit hoping for some thoughtful debate on this issue and I’m met with deafening silence and articles about how Biden “won” the debate despite widespread coverage of Biden’s implosion and ignoring the fact that the paper of record is calling for the SITTING PRESIDENT TO DROP OUT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE! Burying our heads in the sand and pretending everything is okay will not work. He needs to step aside, finish his term, and let somebody else with a fighting chance run this race.

  16. It takes a special kind of stupid to think 1 bad debate performance should disqualify the incumbent president from re-election.
No one else at this stage will beat Trump. There’s no one else with the same name recognition and appeal to the middle.

  17. I’m sorry, but saying “We demand more to fight the convicted felon, the one you keep telling us is such a threat” is not the same as “we’re ok with a convicted felon.”

I have no skin in the game so what I say can be taken with a grain of salt.

I also understand that if I had to vote this coming November for one of the two candidates then I would vote for Biden every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Fact is, Trump and the current R’s are a serious threat to democracy in the US along with so much more, and the fact that the Dems are weekend at Berniying Biden shows them to be complicit. Maybe not as bad but clearly not taking the threat as seriously as they should and are 100% responsible for the predicament they are in.

Biden has done some good, infrastructure, debt relief, lots of good stuff with unions. He has also been horrendous on Israel and looks like he sees the Grim Reaper stalking him everywhere he goes.

You can do so much better than this, you should do so much better than this. The world NEEDS you to do so much better than this.

  18. I think it’s a foregone conclusion that they don’t want Trump. It’s just a question of whether or not Biden is the candidate that can prevent him from winning.

  19. No one calling for Biden to step aside is okay with Trump. We are worried that Biden is incapable of winning and we know how important it is.

The NYT editorial says as much. This is a BS headline.

  20. I realize a lot of you are sitting in a Reddit political bubble that is currently self soothing, but you don’t even need to leave Reddit to face the facts of the disconnect between the DNC and what’s supposed to be their base:

  21. They want Biden gone because they don’t think he can win not

That doesn’t mean they like Trump

  22. To the people who say he should drop out, who do you propose should replace him?

Biden one thing going for him that cannot be replaced by any other candidate. NAME BRAND RECOGNITION. Its easy for us on Reddit to suggest other names, but to poorly informed voting electorate they will new to the stage. They will not be able to motivate people to go to the polls, and this election like all other will be about voter turnout. Perhaps if any other candidate had a full election cycle to get their name out there this would be a possibility, but it simply isn’t. There simply aren’t any stars of the Democratic party that can step up to the plate right now.

Biden was the wrong choice, but this should have been addressed well over a year ago. We are 4 months out from the election. Biden is our candidate. This talk of replacing him is only further eroding the voting electorate’s confidence and hurting our chances and keeping Trump out.

  23. Why are people whining about this?

The GOP will not remove Trump whether he’s a convicted felon or in prison. If he wins this election the GOP will take over the govt and Americans will lose rights for generations.

If the Democrats don’t remove Biden they will lose the election.

It doesn’t matter thats he’s a good president and fundamentally a better person. His public perception is historically low and his performance at the debate was dismal.

Biden is running behind in the polls. He is not inspiring his base or independents to get out and vote.

In an election this close it will only take a 1% drop in voter turnout will equal a landslide for the GOP.

The democrats need to do the right thing and stop being loyal to candidates. They need to win an election. If Biden loves his country he needs to show it and step down.

  24. just cancelled my subscription and this time i won’t be back, ever.

  25. The NY Times does not not run the government and everyone with any sense of responsibility should cancel their subscription!!!!

  26. There is no do-over. The entire world saw Biden’s eyes during the answer to the question which ends with “Medicare”. That is indelible.
By contrast, Trump appeared to be almost civilized. We know he is not.
Biden was supposed to put to rest notions that he was demented. Instead he raised questions about his senility.
    What to do?
No one with a moral compass wants Donald Trump to be president again. No man in history of this country has gone from Potus to Ex-Con. He has yet to serve time.

There are many more fine points to be made by those who are smarter and more glib than me.

My message to you all is this:

When all is said and done, weighed and considered, one is left with the realization that there can be no change at this time. Any change would hand victory to Trump on the proverbial silver platter.
Not enough time, no name recognition, no dark horse candidate would win against Trump in this final lap of the 2024 election.

    You have the power.

    You have the vote.
    Don’t throw it away

And don’t vote for Trump by doing so.o

  27. We have two choices: Biden or Project 2025. I’ll vote Biden.
