French teens charged with anti-Semitic rape of 12-year-old girl • FRANCE 24 English

Angela look let’s talk about one specific um story first of all this is um something the president Emanuel macron said earlier on today he described the scourge of anti-Semitism in France this was after two 13-year-old boys were charged with the rape of a 12-year-old girl who herself is Jewish tell us a bit about the case and how it’s sort of impacting the political campaign today yeah there were two 13-year-old boys and a 12-year-old the two 13-year-olds have been chared Ed uh with rape of this Jewish 12-year-old and uh using anti-semitic uh insults it is a an allegation which is horrifying on on so many levels uh and it has thrust into the center of the campaign two issues uh which uh are are now front and center the issue of violent crime and the issue of anti-Semitism violent crime has often being cited amongst those who vote for the national rally as a key priority it is nationally according to polls now high on the list of people’s priorities there’s a fear of a breakdown of Law and Order and a rise in violent crime on the left uh it has been said in the past that the issue has been exaggerated that people fear violent crime more than it really exists there’s a precedent here back in 2002 uh there was a very serious violent crime right before the uh final round of the election and it is thought to have swayed people’s voting intentions leading to the the arrival of Jean Marie Leen FR National in the second round and it was uh attributed to that incident the other issue is uh anti-Semitism and this has led to the trading of accusations on both sides of the political uh Spectrum here uh the those who criticize the far right say that it is historic rooted in anti-Semitism and that even though it claims to have shared its anti-Semitism it hasn’t and today Jordan bardella was forced to disown a candidate uh who in 2018 posted uh clearly anti-semitic content uh on the farle there are many who criticize the farle and say that they have used the uh conflict in Gaza to willfully blur uh their criticisms of uh the action of the Israeli government with French Jews in France both of those issues have come right to the center of this campaign whatever else you can say about this campaign it has concentrated Minds it’s moving very very quickly it will only get Messier

President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday denounced the “scourge of anti-Semitism” after authorities charged two 13-year-old boys with the gang rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl in a Paris suburb. The attack, suspected to have been motivated by anti-Semitism, has sent shock waves through the Jewish community and added to tensions ahead of a snap election that could bring the far-right National Rally to power for the first time.     an intolerant ideology. and then people ring their hands about
