Supermarket cameras to guess age of alcohol buyers

  1. OR, and hear me on this one

You know those clubcards? Tesco, Morrisons and perhaps the other stores have one, why not have those be registered to the user with the age of the user? The self checkout already use a camera, not like they couldn’t also set it to scan your face for a couple of first-time uses to then add a face profile to the card and then scan your match your face, or hell add a quick pin to type in when you buy Alcohol to simply confirm you’re the owner of the card, a couple of seconds added rather than wait for an Sales assistant, let’s be honest once they use Cameras to guess the age, they will likely redeploy the Sale Assistant from the shelf checkout to another part of the store.

I doubt the Cameras in the Supermarket would be able to ID everyone correctly, if anything that would likely lead to more underage buyers.

  2. On principle I’ll be avoiding any supermarkets that have self service checkout cameras.

It’s one thing to cut staff and direct us to have a go at being a cashier ourselves, but Jesus christ, how long until every shelf has a mounted camera, or cameras nestled in the fruit & veg.

I can accept cameras at the entrance/exit and a couple inside with a broad view of the store, but between supercharging the surveillance and club/rewards cards logging everything I buy to push “deals” at me via email it’s an exercise in data collection that all but measures my inside leg as I step inside.

  3. Supermarkets will eventually build up facial profiles on their customers linked to what size condoms they buy, then have those adverts follow them around the shop.
