Overcrowding, what about all the violent people being given suspended sentences on the outside?
Fuck em, we’ve delayed it long enough. We are not such a morally resolute people that we don’t need it
Try outsourcing to the British ~ that’s what we do with stuff we are incapable to get done anyways like defending our own waters. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s better that the violence is inflicted on the innocent public I suppose. Moronic
There’s a dire need to build more prisons
I’m shocked! Helen is usually on top of her portfolio.
Won’t somebody please think of the violent scumbags?!
There’s no political will to build more prisons. Extra costs but I think it’d be a popular move. The only issue is the prisons are so overcrowded as it is they’d still be overcrowded
The last attempt to build a new prison died when they tried to put it somewhere specific. The Irish people are all for new prison capacity, so long as it is placed in some higher dimensional space well away from where they live. Seems the prison service will have to muddle through trying to wedge extra cells into whatever space is available on their current sites.
I do feel sorry for the prison officers – it’s grand saying “let the prisoners attack one another”, but the officers have to at least try and stop it getting out of hand, and deal with the aftermath.
Anyone know when the last time either a brand new prison was built, or an existing prison was substantially expanded in Ireland?
I feel like it’s already been 20 years or so and the population is only going up, up and up.
Prisons are also a critical piece of state infrastructure and IMO it really is time to build a new state of the art facility somewhere. Apparently the country is doing so well with all of these budget surpluses so perhaps it’s time to do something tangible with it.
Maybe we can we start putting prisoners in hotels and people’s spare rooms?

That slogan behind her is painfully ironic
