The demonstrations against the finance bill started a week ago. Last Thursday, one person was killed and at least 200 injured in demonstrations across Kenya, according to human rights groups and the country’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority watchdog. The protests have been driven largely by youth-led digital activism. Young people have used platforms such as X and TikTok to oppose the bill, crowdfund, organise and mobilise protests against it. At least 12 people suspected of involvement in the demonstrations over the past five days have been abducted, according to Amnesty International.
