This is a drawing from one of Croatia’s most prominent caricaturists, Nik Titanik. The caption below says: “Several discarded designs for the back side of Croatia’s Euro coins”. Explanation for each follows, top to bottom, left to right.
An envelope, symbolizing bribery & corruption. “Whatever you want to do, all you need is to pass a blue envelope to the right person.”
HDZ, the most popular political party in Croatia. Also the only one convicted for corruption by a court. Despite that, still the most popular one. “Whatever you want to do, all you need is a HDZ membership card”.
Hats of “Ustaše” and “Partizani”. Ustaše controlled Croatia while it was a Nazi puppet state during WW2, today right wing people are associated with them. Partizani were the ones who took over after WW2 and forming communist Yugoslavia, today left wing people are associated with them. Which ever serious topic in Croatia is initiated, pretty soon it’s diluted by people on opposite sides calling each other these names and the original topic is forgotten and status quo is maintained.
A sheep, symbolizing that prople of Croatia are sheep. See other descriptions for more context.
1991? Yugoslavia fell apart in 1991 and the war broke out. Some people didn’t want to participate in it and fled to other countries. In recent decades whenever someone tries to take some initiative, he’ll be asked “and where were you in 1991?”. If he wasn’t fighting in the war, his opinion doesn’t matter. Even if he wasn’t born yet or was just a child.
In my opinion, they give a pretty good picture of the political climate in Croatia, a lot of things which are as they are are because of these things.
I don’t get none of them. I am more curious about the envelope.
