I don’t really see why this is not something that is put in place. The only arguments from people I have spoken to about this stuff is generally only “Why would any one want to be out that late – That is ridiculous”. “If you need to be drinking into the early hours of the morning then you have other problems”, “I don’t want drunk people walking around the streets at 4 in the morning”, or “It’s not fair for the people that have to work those late shifts, or for the nightclubs to have to stay open – They will be losing money because no one will be going that late”
As you can imagine, these are all people that work 9-5 and have PLENTY of time to go out to socialising outside of these hours.
1. There are PLENTY of people working evening/night time shifts that don’t have ANY opportunity for night time socialising.
2. If people do not want to work these hours, then don’t apply for the roles that would be for these hours
3. If the premises is making a loss – Then don’t open – It’s a choice. Simple as that.
4. You don’t want people walking around drunk at all hours in the morning – But it’s fine for you and others to be walking around drunk at 1am/2am?
The legislation is ready isn’t it?
Club owners can stay open if they want to, those that don’t don’t have to. I don’t understand why it’s proving so difficult and/or controversial.

Are we still going to clubs…..
There is a silent majority of Irish people that absolutely hate clubs and anyone who attends them.
They want the same dj to play the same songs every night or some band doing the same. It’s depressing.
Sure why are you going to nightclubs you’re too old is trotted out alot.
As shocking as it sounds there are some who enjoy electronic music and not having to go home at 2am
What clubs. Is there any left. We should have had this 30 years ago 🙁
To the Vatican 🥳🥳🥳
It’s clearly much better for people to drink as much as possible before 2am and for the streets to be filled with everyone when everywhere closes at the same time. All crowding around takeaways and hailing taxis and getting into fights.
Staggering the times at which people go home and giving people options to stay out later if they want is a moral hazard that must be avoided.
Tourists go to clubs too, all these gigs and not enough places to go after for a decent amount of time. Leaving money on the table
The legislation approval for this has constantly been kicked down the road by the government – by Varadkar in particular
I would bet both of my arse cheeks that this is the carrot they’ll wave to get the vote from the under 25s come General Election time
Should have happened 20 years ago when we actually had a busy nite life and lots of niteclubs. Everyone leaving niteclubs at the one time back then was chaotic, streets covered with drunken people, takeaways jammers, cars, and taxis unable to get down streets with the mass of bodies… and of course, all the fights.
There’s barely a niteclub left in my town now, and it’s barely staying afloat. Not sure how or why they think extending hours will help it.
But better late than never I guess.
I agree with later opening hours but it does little to nothing to save Irish night life.
There are barely any nightclubs left. Huge overheads and Insurance costs are the main culprits. The same issues plague pubs. These things need to be addressed, there is also a need to review our licensing laws.
It’s far too difficult to open pubs and nightclubs these days. We need to address why there are very few new businesses opening in this sector, slapping later hours on the problem will do nothing.
Nightlife in Dublin is dead anyway
I’m out at clubs most weekends in the city and someone here on holiday asking why the music stopped so early is more common than you’d think.
Not against the extended hours but will it do anything to revive nightlife in a significant way? People, young ones especially don’t seem to be going out as aften as I would have at that age. Like I’d have gone out at college and again at home on Friday and/or Saturday up at home but people that age now I know wouldn’t be coming close to going out that often, nor could they afford to.
The clubs left near me only open Friday and Saturday now and town in general is not close to being as busy on them nights as it would have even 10 years ago even factoring in less places open now and an increase in population. Many pubs even don’t bother opening Monday-Wednesday.
Walking across town on a Sunday morning coffee places are full of young people with gym bags, who clearly aren’t recovering from a feed of pints on Saturday.
I think the decline wasn’t helped by Covid but it was certainly evident long before it, from around maybe 2014-16? No idea what the cause would have been back then though?
As a DJ myself, I’m all for this, but on the flip side, I can’t see the general uptake being very large. As a nation, we tend to get sauced by 11, get to the club, get buckled, get some supermacs and be in a taxi by 2/2:30. Compared to Europe, Ibiza etc, where they are only getting warmed up by 2 am. Ditto for the purpose of going to a club; people go to drink and get the ride, they aren’t going for the music, etc. That, and you can only stay out so long drinking vesus other substances. There’s also been a generational shift in the last decade or so, the allure of drinking in clubs has certainly diminished.
It should absolutely happen, but I can’t see it making much of a social change. I believe the majority of people will still do as they always have and there will be a handful of niche places, which given the size of the market, I couldn’t see surviving long term. Hope to be wrong on that one.
The simple truth is that a lot of Irish people have an awful interpretation of fun, and anything outside of pub culture is bad.
I have left Ireland and am enjoying one of the greatest rave scenes that I’ve ever experienced. It might not be for everyone, but fuck me if it isn’t unreal craic. The police only come by to check late licenses (from the street outside), and every party goes until 7am or 9.
Also, I quit drinking so it’s genuinely incredible to be able to go somewhere which isn’t full of drunk cunts who think that pub culture is the be all and end all.
I’m an extremely proud Irish person, but honestly I love the idea of the island more than I do the thing that it really is: a boring, basic, backwater.
I’m at the age where a nightclub is the past place I’d want to be, but this was supposed to come in years ago was it not?
A bit fucking late seen as most of the clubs have shut down already…
Spare a thought for us poor creators who live nearby.
I already have to deal with assholes roaring outside my window from 10pm until half 2 in the morning. Please don’t let this happen I won’t be able to cope.
