The survey results as reported here suggest a massive gap between what’s happening and the public’s interest in and perception of same. Ignorance is rife
We have. But for them the issues is it just hasn’t been on a level that they think it causes them an inconvenience, therefore they won’t do anything until is causes them an inconvenience and by that point then the s*** has not only hit the fan but its covered every inch of the room. They dont seem to get by then it’s far too late to revers.
People do not want to make changes because they’re too feckin lazy – but change will come, one way or the other.
It’s more that we’re only a drop in the ocean relative to the real culprits.
My family is like this. Its very annoying.
People want to have their cake and eat it, nothing new there. It’s been my opinion for years that we should focus on adaptation rather than prevention. It’s beyond the capabilities of the human race collectively to make the necessary changes.
We should be building a semi circular sea wall to encompass the entirety of Dublin Bay
This sub has really opened my eyes to how rampant the problem of climate doomerism can truly be.
How does paying more solve it?? 🙄🙄
We need nuclear powered CO2 scrubbers or have every scrap of spare land turned into a forest then when matured used to build ‘stuff’ or just turfed into the sea or buried…
Tough one alright… on the one hand you’ve the old ‘sure, what difference would I make anyway’ several million individuals wonder… & on the other you’ve resistance by many of those same people to any actual large scale actions (solar farms, etc.).
We have too much choice with everything now and we have lost track of what we once stood for.
We need to strip it back, lock down the Airways, no flights in or out of the country, remove the Internet, bring back phone boxes where you had to queue to call people and get ourselves back to the 90s.
We then need to set up multiple hunger game style events where county’s take on each other in galditorial combat. With one county reigning supreme and taking the resources from the rest of the land.
We can call it the All Ireland.
It’s the only solution lads
The same climate change deniers will complain the bag of spuds that’s now costed €8 when they used to buy it for a fraction of that cost.
We get what we deserve and as someone pushing for climate action for over a decade and it falling on deaf ears, I will be against compensation to people who impacted by it. Nows our chance to reduce the damage but you lot won’t care until if affects you directly and at that stage I won’t care.
All this shows is that the government is shockingly out of touch with what life is like on the ground.
>The report also found many people are reluctant to live car-free
Yes because public transport is either absent or laughably unreliable
>and are sceptical about the value of fitting heat pumps in their homes.
Rightly so – you need an A+ rated home for a heat pump to work, most people don’t have those and don’t have the 100K+ it would cost to get to it. A lot of people are struggling to live, never mind find 100 grand down the back of a sofa. The far right are doing so well in Germany partially off the back of forcing this.
>It found climate-focused activities are often perceived as “Dublin-centric” and can alienate people in more regional and rural areas, while older people who prefer using traditional forms of heating struggle to grasp the concept of having a warmer home without an open fire.
See previous point
>The study found Irish people intend to do more to address the threat, such as switching to an electric car but still had concerns about the “prohibitive cost” of electric vehicles (EVs).
And rightly so, plus the EU are doing everything they can to keep EVs unaffordable by slapping tariffs on Chinese EVs that people could ACTUALLY afford.
Kick it down the road. Let our great grandchildren despise us.
We need to make changes but we also need to not make mega-corporations make us believe it’s all our fault.
Who is doing more damage? Jimmy who isn’t aware of proper plastic recycling and puts in the wrong bin every week or Mega-Corp X pumping their sludge into rivers every day?
Climate scientists don’t help their cause when they make so many predictions that prove incorrect.
It has to be a top down approach, not bottom up. The top is where the vast majority of the damage is coming from.
Like how can you blame people for flying, when aeroplanes are available for them to fly in ? How can you blame people for eating meat, when supermarkets have multiple aisles devoted to it ?
People are right to be skeptical when this is the scenario, and the government approach is simply to make it more expensive for ordinary people while people at the top report record profits facilitating the habits we’re supposed to cease.
Also, it’s a bit sly to lump flying for holidays and eating meat together with driving a car. Independent transport is essential for most of the country, geographically. And again, people will adopt EV’s when the government make it make sense to do so. How’s about scrapping VRT on EV’s ? A double taxation that is already illegal according to the EU ? Hahahaha hahahaha, just kidding. That won’t happen in our great little country. Why isn’t Eamon Ryan banging his drum for that I wonder ? And look what the EU wants to do when a company comes along that looks like they could provide really solid EVs at a reasonable price – I’m talking about BYD cars. The EU wants to put massive tarrifs on them. Once again squeezing every last cent out of the little guy whilst ensuring the Uber capitalists at the top can turn record profits providing a shite service. Because that won’t promote skepticism.
At the end of the day, if the powers that be were genuine, they would take a different approach. A top down approach. And make changes as affordable as possible for people at the bottom.
They’re doing the opposite. Which naturally promotes skepticism.

It’s more that it costs money and is inconvenient
