Once a year in my hometown, the old folks dress up all the bollards with their knitting.

  1. I’ve seen plenty of postboxes decorated, but not bollards. Doesn’t it just get covered in dog piss?

  2. Around here, that’d be either stolen or on fire before Doris got halfway back down the street.

  3. Reminiscing about hometown traditions always brings back such warm memories.

  4. Town near us will knit some santa/elf hats on their bollards over Christmas, pretty neat and avoids the dog piss issue.

  5. The world needs more harmless whimsy. Makes people smile, though sadly in many places it would be destroyed. Took time, and imagination to do. I love it!

  6. They do it on trees round my way. You know ‘coz trees need a blanket, even in the summer.

    They call it yarn-bombing apparently.

  7. Armley in Leeds does this.

Hawes in north Yorkshire also does it sometimes too

  8. Yes.

There’s an annual summer festival, and the bollards etc are “yarn bombed” to fit the theme.

It’s harmless and charming, and helps drive foot traffic to a struggling high street.

  9. That’s crochet, but it’s ok, most people don’t know the difference if they don’t do one or the other. Crochet is made with one hook rather than two needles. Lovely even stitching though.

  10. Once someone tied knitted squares to everything they could and then they just got soaked with rain and rotted.

  11. Basically littering.
Nobody’s going to spend the money on using wool for this so it’ll be acrylic yarn. Washing down a load of plastic fibres everywhere.

  12. Bollards no but trees, fences, walls, letter boxes Hell yes

  13. Yeah, Cheadle in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The group that does it does this knitting/crocheting thing for the bollards for lots of different events. Fair play to them. Considering we’re quite a deprived town everyone seems to respect them and they stay up for a fair old while 👍

Edit. You can even see some on streetview. The Queen bollard on July 2022 is a thing of beauty lol

  14. This is so beautiful! I wish people did this where I live. And the postbox ones too. Never seen one.

Then again I’m sure the local low iq chavs would rip them off once they get bored of harassing people outside Morrisons or graffitiing the kids play area.
