We recently moved into a new area and realised there were tons of long dog friends for our girl to play with and it struck us as odd because we lived in a predominantly labradoodle/labrador area before. What is your areas apparent breed of choice? Any clue what causes these trends?

Walk my dog in areas heavily populated by other dog walkers and I can’t say there’s a specific popular breed or type.
I see a fair amount of Border Collies around where I live . I live near the city centre too, can easily see 5/6 on my early morning walk
Dachshunds are very popular near me but people seem to form small communities around similar breeds. Our longleg has a fantastic playgroup to race with and play fight with, and everyone knows and accepts that human kneecaps are acceptable collateral damage.
Birmingham…Bully (XL/frenchie) and Cockerpoo seem to be the dominant breeds
We have the Guide Dogs National Breeding and a Training Centre in town, so you see lots of those splendid dogs being trained up for the good work they do.
Everyone else has a Cockapoo.
Wonder if people see them about and think “we should get a long dog”, then they do. Rinse and repeat
Central Manchester is dominated by Whippets.
I have a lurcher and around us in Stockport there’s a few greyhounds. Sighthounds are my absolute favourite dog breed.
South Florida here. Tons of different breeds here, including Huskies. 🌡️🤷🌞
BBC published a map (slightly outdated) of which breeds are most popular in which regions. Broadly, it is labrador across the vast majority of the country, staffies in big cities, and jack russells in south wales and northern ireland. I recall seeing an older version where border collies were also the most popular both sides of the Scottish border but must have been updated

Definitely spaniels and Labradors.
So many Jack Russells… I know two called Jack.
Sighthounds our preference too, not that there’s any in the wee village we live in. We have two whippets.
We have a whippet puppy. There’s 3 local to my house and I’m in a whippet what’s app with 165 members. We often meet for walks and it’s something else seeing them all run 😍 (Bristol)
Lots of poodle mixes near me for the young couples, labs for the families and terriers for the old lot.
Whippet/Lurcher around here (Cheshire).
All the old dears in our village have Shih Tzus
I’ve not had a dog for about 4 years now. But when I had my lurcher (whippet x), I saw lots of labradoodles/cockerpoos, Jack Russell types, staffies, and other flat faced breeds. Not many sight hounds though. I’m in the south west.
I live in a very small town/large village outside Manchester.
Rare dog breeds are pretty much 50% of what I see.
There’s a couple of Bearded Collies – fewer than 250 puppies registered last year.
2 Sealyhams – fewer than 150 puppies last year.
A Clumber Spaniel – fewer than 250 puppies last year.
A Bloodhound – 50ish puppies last year.
An Old English Sheepdog – fewer than 400 puppies last year.
A Cairn/Norfolk, I can’t tell – fewer than 500 puppies last year.
A Puli – god knows how many puppies but never seen 1 before.
A Westie – I only include this because I swear you don’t see them ever anymore.
The other 50% are cocker/springer spaniels, random terriers and mini schnauzers. We’re kinda in the country but not really either so it’s not like we’re surrounded by farms. Thankfully the doodle problem hasn’t hit us so far.
We’re a whippet/greyhound family
Greyhounds are incredibly easy to look after. An ex-racing hound needs about 10 seconds of excitement a day, after that it’s basically a rug with a pulse, except when one wants attention.
But they are sight-hounds and if they see something they think might be even remotely like a rabbit, they’re gone and you have basically no chance of catching one.
It used to be whippets and lurchers which were used as hunting dogs. You’d also see a lot of spaniels and the majority did actually use them for hunting and took them out daily for a good run. Nowadays it’s XL bullies or any other big, scary looking dog which the road men walk around with all day as a status symbol and rarely see as a pet
There’s no real majority in my area, but there’s a good 7-ish collies on my normal route, a good 5+ more elsewhere in my town
Why the long face?
