I'm having massive menopausal brain fog so please assist me!
I'm in a medical trial and this is an extract of the agreement between moi and the pharmaceutical company. The trial consists of several hospital visits, every few appointments I have to do fasting bloods.

Does this bit mean that every fasting visit will be compensated by £10, which will only be paid at visit 9 (£90+10)? Or does it mean they're just going to pay £10 at visit 9 and that's it (£10)? TIA!

  1. You will be paid £10 every visit but only 9 times. But its for refreshments, so it may be a voucher for use on site, after the study since it sounds like you have to arrive fasted.

  2. It’s worth noting that, if you are driving and they’re paying standard Mileage Allowance Relief (MAR) rates, that could be worth around 45p per mile to you..you can even claim 20p per mile if you use a bicycle. (Assuming you’re not already claiming it and have already claimed the first 10,000 miles, whereby the rate of MAR would decrease *blah blah etc. blah*….)

e.g. If you drive 22 miles to the clinic and back, you’d be reimbursed £9.90

  3. 9 out of the however many appointments are expected to be long or you need to fast for them. So for those, you’ll be compensated a tenner for food/drink.

  4. 90.

The reason the third paragraph seems to contradict the second is because it’s an ethical issue to pay you to participate (plus paying for your time could lead to being considered an employee, tax issues, etc – especially in larger studies with longer commitments). So they are making clear you’re not being paid for being in the study.

However it’s also an ethical issue if the study makes you worse off without a treatment benefit – so the payment is to offset that inconvenience.
