I know someone who’s baby’s stuff was robbed when she was on the postnatal ward in Holles St. She was in the toilet and baby was sleeping in the little cots they have for newborns. Came back and her locker was empty, including nappies for the baby. Nurses said it happens regularly.
Unsurprisingly she looks like a smackhead.
Genuine question, not trying to be a douchebag at all, but does anyone know the pathophysiology of why drug addicts seem to sometimes have *very* distinct jaw / tooth patterns which immediately make one think “Ah shit, probably addicted to opiates or booze”?
I know “meth mouth” is a thing but that usually pertains simply to a *loss* of teeth or damage to them. The woman in this story just seems to have central incisors which for some reason developed *behind* her lateral ones rather than adjacent to or in front of them. On top of that, her mouth has a sort of triangular “grimace / scowl” shape which I’d also associate very very strongly with long-term drug or alcohol addicts in Dublin.
I’d be lying if I said that this isn’t a facial feature I’ve noticed in probably dozens of articles like this, which all tend to have chronic substance abuse as a feature – indeed, this story doesn’t even mention substance issues but I’d be willing to bet that it’ll turn out they are playing a factor, just from that photograph.
I don’t mean this to seem insensitive I’m just genuinely curious. Is it a developmental thing from using drugs at a young age, a congenital thing from maternal drug use during pregnancy or is this something which it’s possible to develop as an adult using drugs, even though you’d assume your adult teeth and shape of your jawline are more or less set in stone from the end of adolescence?
I’d be very interested if anyone knew the answer to any of this. When I read the article, upon seeing the photo my literal *first* thought was “probably hasn’t been sober in years”, which is obviously very prejudiced and I felt bad for thinking it, but there definitely seems to be a correlation from my own anecdotal experience. Of course, if there’s no correlation at all I’m happy to admit that I’m wrong, but the photograph generated an *immediate* “ah, drugs” reaction for me, and I’d love to know why that is.
Both accused will get a slap on the wrist , in spite of what the judge said on the likely jail time .
