If you can’t find your way around Tokio Hotel, Helene Fischer, Andreas Bourani or had enough Rammstein and are looking for something a bit more wholesome/alternative/lyrically interesting, you might enjoy this playlist I made. It contains a couple of West German/GDR classics as well as weirder stuff (Nina Hagen), singer-songwriter and some more well-known classics plus some Austrian-artist songs. It’s just the take of a German who dislikes 95% of current German-speaking mainstream music, so perhaps you’ll find yourself in that one. Hope you enjoy.

Any suggestions for some more musically complex and/or lyrically interesting German-speaking pop/rock songs? Please also add some more by Austrian and Swiss artists if you know some. I’ll be happy to add some!
Btw: I realize it’s not “mostly” outside the mainstream, but only at least partly. I couldn’t change the post description anymore after I hit submit. Would be especially grateful for some more alternative/lesser known good music if you know some!
Edit: Just to avoid confusion, because I didn’t make myself clear initially: This is a playlist of German-**language** music. It also includes Austrian artists (Falco, Wanda etc.).

I’m sorry but as an American I am certain Rammstein is the only German band there has ever been.
Do you know Nylon?
Falco, the most cherished German export.
Vielen Dank das ist sehr gut!

At /r/Germusic you can e.g. [search for “indie”](/r/germusic/search?q=indie&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all) or [“Hamburger Schule”](/r/germusic/search?q=hamburger+schule&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all)
Thank you for this! Learning German at the moment, music is a nice supplement to my studies.
