European car makers were caught asleep at the wheel and are suffering under twin attack from Tesla and the Chinese. Let’s hope they can regain the initiative, but it may be too little too late
This EU probe hit Tesla as well. Musk seeks “special treatment”.
All the carmakers knew the chinese were subsidizing their battery industry early on, and giving support to the ev makers. But instead the european carmakers just bought from china as they sold cheaper batteries than other countries. And companies like BYD moved on to making cars to use their batteries, and they got really good at it. But the EU did not do anything before it became a threat to the local industry.
Why are they so slow to respond, and why is the only tool they have more taxes?
Freaking protectionism should be illegal
I was going to get one. Now I won’t. Eat my CO2 now
“EU government makes car ownership even more expensive for its citizens to keep profits flowing into the pockets of its corporations”
Or just produce competitive affordable cars again?
God forbid people can afford shit
Well, EU cars are too expensive and now Chinese ones will be too. Guess I’ll buy a second hand GPL car and wait 8-10 years.
dont worry, no one will ever buy chinese crap
Sadly this would have been nice for the environment, getting cheap electric vehicles on the market so people who are too poor to afford them got one.
Finally a solution that would work out as affordable option, but frankly that seems to be too much for the profits of the car lobby and that way the politicians who get paid by them.
Ecology is very important for the EU, but only when certain companies make money from it.
My only complain is 38% is too low, but its a start.
If you believe I will have a slightly sympathy to the Western cars like German or French manufacturers, you are completely mistaken. The same companies that killed local ones like Dacia have the audacity to point fingers about them being slaughtered by bigger fish. I for once, say fuck them. Not a inch of my money to the car manufacturers.
I for once I welcome our Japanese overlords. Toyota fan since birth.
The world is getting a little bigger everyday.
I’m more annoyed about the nonsense the EU use as an excuse for these. Germany and France have been subsidising and bailing out their manufacturers for decades. We are the ones losing out.
How are people against this?
Mind boggling. This is the way to preserves EU economies and thus make us collectively financially stronger.
Being in bed with Chinese manufacturers is such a stupidly short term way of thinking because the damage comes years later.
Good for European carmakers bad for citizens of the EU as well as climate goals
They are too low
China wants somebody from China to have a 51% share in companies for them to conduct business in China. It’s essentially a 51% tax rate with the added requirement that you concede control over your business to them. Then on top of that they get to pay absolutely no attention to our contracts, patents, and privacy. And if you do not. Then you don’t get to conduct business in China.
Then our own nations claim that 15-30% taxes is too much and business would go elsewhere if they were raised.
Leave I say.
On top of that. Let’s have a 51% corporate tax rate with controlling shares in all foreign businesses. Let’s ignore international patents and contract law. And not just tit for tat with China. It’s clearly acceptable for US businesses to conduct business in China under such conditions. Let’s stop funding the US stock market and start building our own businesses – or taking a 51% share of theirs if they want to operate here.
Why EU car makers were in stagnation at least last 10 years? What was the difference with say USA where Tesla appeared that time?
Hilarious that the EU decides to enact protectionist policies to develop their own EV industry but then complains to WTO when Indonesia enacts protectionist policies for their nickel to develop their industries
