  1. Yesterday was the second and final round of the 2024 France snap legislative election. French citizens living in Luxembourg could vote in the Benelux constituency, one of the 11 constituencies dedicated for French living abroad. The final result was very close in this constituency (50.24% versus 49.76%) and Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade, the centrist candidate of Macron’s party, won it by only 349 votes. Unsurprisingly, Luxembourg is much less left-leaning than the rest of the constituency.

Among the 11 constituencies for French citizens living abroad, 10 have been won by Macron’s party and 1 by the left-wing alliance (one in Africa, mostly comprised of Muslim countries). In France overall, the second-round resulted in a surprisingly good result for the left-wing alliance and a relatively disappointing result for the Rassemblement National, most of that can be explained by the informal alliance that has been put in place between the first-round and the second-round between the left-wing alliance and Macron’s party against Marine le Pen’s party. However, at the moment, it seems impossible that a stable government will emerge from these results.
