I was planning to go to Spain for two weeks, but seems like tourists are not welcomed. I was wondering if this was general sense. I don't want to take my family to a place where we will be intimidate for being tourists. Please explain if this is the real sentiment of the Spain people.

  1. Tourists are welcome. As long as you respect the local lifestyle and nature. If you understand you’re not in a theme park or a resort (unless you’re in an actual one), then you’d be more than welcome.

  2. I truly believe Spain is the most beautiful country in the world. I fell in love with Spain teaching medieval history. Seeing it for the first time almost felt like a religious experience. It is so beautiful, filled with culture, history, and art. When I got home I started following this sub, and now feel, due to articles like this and frequent posts sharing a similar sentiment, as if foreigners are actually somewhat unwelcome. If I had never seen articles like this, I would have visited Spain over and over again.

Ironically, the most moving part of my trip to Spain was visiting the grave of Walter Benjamin…

  3. You will be welcome the same of the millions that visit Spain every year.

  4. This article refers to Barcelona, not Spain in general. There is resentment there about AirB&B (used principally by tourists) driving up the price of rent and generally reducing the availability of housing for average citizens. It’s not really about the tourists per se. It’s also embarrassing that some protest in such stupid and aggressive way. Spain depends massively on tourism and tourists are generally welcomed.

  5. One idea could be to circumvent places like Barcelona. Just go to the lesser known cities and people will be happy you’ve come.

  6. OP don’t get all worked up over protests in a specific city with unique movements against unique tourist problems.

Saying that tourist aren’t welcome in Spain isn’t accurate. You should read about Barcelona and the effect of tourism on the locals and may want to to just consider other cities amidst current events.

Spain has a lot to offer. Barcelona is just a small (albeit popular) part of the entire country and its tourist destinations.

Go to Spain. Discover an amazing land. And if you don’t visit Barcelona this time, its not a big deal. You’ll still love your time there.
