I live in a pre 1900 mid terrace, lived here 17 years but only recently found this hole in the entry! Any ideas??

  1. If this is the main entrance to the house then maybe it is a post box or for milk deliveries.

  2. I’d put my lunch money on it being an access plate for cleaning a chimney.

  3. Wonder if it might be related to some old type of lighting.

  4. It could be for sweeping the chimney, assuming there’s a chimney above that place.

  5. It’s a chimney vent. Adds to the draw up the chimney (increasing air flow) and provides access for the chimney sweep to shove his brushes.

The little access door can also be opened to give greater air flow through that little area if livestock are kept there.
