Thousands of new recruits begin military service in Finland

1. **Around 12,000 new recruits joined the Finnish Defence on Monday, composed of both male conscripts and female volunteers.**

   Around 10,000 of these recruits will start their service with the Finnish Army. The Finnish Navy will receive around 1,600 recruits and the remainder will join Finland’s Air Force or Border Guard.

   The largest inductions of recruits occur biannually, with the majority of cohorts entering the military in January or July.

   Some recruits, such as those at the Defence Forces’ Sports School, report for service at a different schedule, which explains why NBA star **Lauri Markkanen** began his high-profile military service in April last year.

   The new recruits’ training will last either 165, 255 or 347 days, depending on their rank, position and unit. After completing their military training, the recruits will be members of the reserve of the Finnish Defence Forces.

   The majority of conscripts will serve for 347 days, which is the same length of time as those opting for civilian service.
