  7. Been living in Switzerland for a very long time now. I think that a monarchy is a sorry remnant from the past; power should come from the people in the end.

    And before you say: “yeah but a president…”

    No: Switzerland has a 7-person council that runs the country on a day to day basis. A single outlier does not cause great disturbances; we know this, since we had our “Swiss Trump” with Christoph Blocher in the mid 00s, and that had little influence.

    As for the actual head of state: the Swiss people is the sovereign.

  19. There are NO, literally NO monarchies existing in Europe anymore.
    All there is is this stupid circus where people adulate their own ideas about what the royalty was. It is a museum with live figurines. Royal families are at most PR firms at this point, and are succesful because some people actually choose, deliberately, to ignore reality and pretend they are somehow important, like the people who believe in astrology or whatever. The king has 0 political power in Britain, and any kind has just as much power anywhere else
    It’s the best time to be in a so called royal family though. A ton of cash, and no real responsability.

  29. As a British person, the only argument I find makes sense for keeping the royal family around is A) the tourism and B) the issues that changing over to a republic would cause.

    I think we definitely need to really tighten up what the royal family can do and how much they have. I know yearly the amount we pay in tax is like £1 but that’s not looking at the assets they own that could be utilised for the rest of the country in a multitude of ways.
