I'm not really a follower of game shows these days, other than Pointless. Not sure if it's my imagination but there seemed to be more about in the 80s and 90s, with some of my favourites being Bullseye, Play your cards right, Big Break and 3-2-1 amongst others.

But the one that stands out in my memory the most was when Les Dawson hosted Blankety Blank, and that was all down to Les. Such an underrated comedian, his put on dour demeanor suited the format perfectly.

  1. Does Taskmaster count? Then Taskmaster.

If Countdown counts then Countdown is an all time great. Classic afternoon viewing with the father in law for me, that.

  2. Shooting stars- can that be counted as a game show????

  3. Generation Game. Loved Brucie and Larry Grayson they were so funny.

  4. Bob’s Full House

    The Krypton Factor

    First Class (on Children’s BBC)

  5. I was always fond of classic Catchphrase, with Roy Walker.

  6. Big Break was good, a deadpan John Virgo against Davidson. Could see the loathing in Virgo’s eyes.

Pat Sharp’s Fun House when I was a kid was great fun. I always told myself I would smash it, then remembered the balloon tunnel.

  7. I don’t remember much about it now, but I’m pretty certain it was Whittle with Tim Vine.

  8. Favourites as a kid were The Price is Right, Play Your Cards Right, Generation Game, and Bullseye.
We watched an episode of Bullseye on Challenge at the weekend – my 12 year old son and my partner’s 27 year old daughter were not impressed at all, but it was worth it for the contestants outfits and the prizes. Also Jim Bowen kept fumbling the questions, and we all thought it was hilarious that he had the prize money in his pockets!

  9. The crystal Maze, supermarket sweep, robot wars, gladiators and blind date! I also loved blankety blank with Lilly Savage ❤️

  10. I was recently reminded of Blockbusters, pretty good format and entertaining.

  11. Crystal Maze, hands down.

*NO! Left! LEFT! Turn it the OTHER way!*

  12. Does anyone remember the show with the chap from Art Attack where the kids just trashed a mockup house to find some small clue or something? Definitely 90s I think.

  13. Going for gold…it was like the Euros of quiz shows

  14. Catchphrase is always going to be my top answer but I really liked Weakest Link first time around. Not sure how I feel about the new episodes. Romesh Ranganathan is much nicer than Anne Robinson and it’s missing that bite

  15. I used to love Les Dawson getting pissed off at shitty answers. His comic timing was incredible.

Stephen Mulhern tries to do similar shtick with modern Catchphrase but he’s much too chipper
