Everytime I hear about Georgia’s EU membership process I have to ask into the void: Excuse me have any of you looked on a map??? It’s a country sandwiched between Russia and Turkey (which will not join the EU let’s be real), it is not accessible from the EU by land and close to several countries with ongoing conflicts and/or straight up hostility towards the EU/West.
Obviously the politicians that initiated this know this and it’s a way of nudging a country towards OUR sphere of influence over many years, but even if Georgia became a beacon of democracy, prosperity etc. the surrounding hostile/unstable circumstances would still make it an absurd risk for the EU – Someone explain this to me.
Good.
It’s good to see that the EU has come to this conclusion.
That a big red flag against our values. We have currently many other problems and don’t need another one.
My heart goes out to the people of Georgia currently fighting for their freedom.
I hope they can wrestle their country back from Bidzina Ivanishvili and his gang of thugs
Sad reality is that protests, even country wide ones, work only against “normal”, somewhat democracy oriented governments. Authoritarians or politicians with authoritarian tendencies don’t give a fuck.
Remember that next time you complain about democratically elected politicians in your country
Peaceful protests are useless when the monsters you are fighting don’t hold back on the use of violence.
The only chance they have, is to look at history and see what were some good ways to deal with traitors in the past, because that’s what their leaders are, traitors.
They side with Russia over Georgia, to fill their own pockets they victimise their entire country.
I wish EU focused on russian businesses in Georgia. Including those that offshored themselves in Georgia to evade sanctions on Russia. It is them who influence Georgian government with money.
But wasn’t that exactly the reaction the FSB was going for?
Georgia and Kazakhstan are not in Europe.
Yeah, nothing of progress has been made.
“Under the terms of the bill, NGOs receiving more than 20 percent of their funds from overseas will have to declare that they are “carrying out the interests of a foreign power,” enter themselves into a register and make detailed financial disclosures.”
Now of course the application of this law in Georgia will be biased and not in pro EU Georgians interest.
But I think the EU should also have a law like this. Organisations with foreign funding should be disclosing their finances and scrutinised.
