US election: If Biden quits race, who might replace him? • FRANCE 24 English

now doubts continue to grow in the United States over whether Joe Biden is up for a second term in office the president has blamed travel for his debate against Donald Trump the Administration has been desperately trying to dismiss last week’s performance as a oneoff but now some Democrats are speaking out we have all these things that he was masterful in helping to orchest to write and to pass so he has a vision he has knowledge he has judgment he has a strategic thinking in the rest he has a bad night now again I think it’s a legitimate question to say is this an episode or is this a condition and so when people ask that question it’s completely IL legitimate of both candidates okay uh we can now bring in our International Affairs editor and former White House correspondent K van uh gorgeous s I’m not going to ask you if this is an episode or or condition but let’s talk about how much pressure is Biden under uh to step down essentially well the pressure is definitely uh growing ever since that debate performance and now you have one representative representative Lloyd duet who has become the first sitting Democrat in Congress to actually openly and officially call for Joe Biden to quit the race he said I’m hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw I respectfully call on him to do so and now there are reports in Us Media that a group of about 20 to 25 Democrats on the Hill are planning uh to come out in the next few days calling for Joe Biden to step down we’ll see if that actually uh happens others like Nancy Pelosi for example have expressed their concern about his performance and his Fitness but have stopped short or of actually calling on him to step aside in this race uh that’s true also of Jamie Rasin of Jim klyber these sort of democratic uh Big Wigs uh but they’re not just concerns about his Fitness about his ability to beat Donald Trump there’s also now growing concern uh on the hill about the the problem he could cause if he stays on the ballot for down ballot Democrats uh as they’re trying to hold on to the Senate and to regain uh the house so let alone lose the White House but also possibly uh lose completely uh control of the Congress but so far the White House insists that Joe Biden is not going anywhere he’s pushing ahead his closest advisers including his family like his wife Joe Biden like his son Hunter Biden have urged him uh to fight on instead the strategy right now in the White House is go out and prove that this was indeed a one-off go out and prove that you are uh fit and that is why you’re going to see an event Blitz coming in the next few days you have a meeting with Governors uh this afternoon uh expected also a meeting with lawmakers sometimes in the next few days uh campaign events over the weekend uh there’s going to be a long long interview uh with ABC’s George spanopoulos that will be taped on Friday and then uh we are expecting a big presser one uh only Joe Biden presser at uh the NATO Summit next week uh those two things long interview and uh alone presser is something he hasn’t done for a long time so they’re really trying to put him out there uh to give the Americans and the Democrats uh this image of Joe Biden being Joe Biden be doing well we’ll see if that gamble pays off we’ll see if that gamble pays off let’s just for argument sake assume that Joe Biden does uh listen uh to the voices outside and does in fact say this is not for me I’ve done it once but but that’s enough who could potentially step in at this late hour we have less than four months to go four months to go until the election exactly well there have been several names floating around because this idea of uh replacing Joe Biden has increased in recent days but it was always kind of round there’s Gavin new the governor of California who’s also a top surrogate of Joe Biden he was in the spin room right after that debate answering questions about uh Joe Biden’s uh Fitness you have Josh Shapiro the governor of Pennsylvania you have Gretchen Whitmer the governor of Michigan uh Andy Basher the governor of Kentucky which is a red State uh Pete Budaj there are Democrats were much younger who could potentially uh do the job and of course there is the vice president of the United States kamla Harris despite the fact that she’s not really popular even though uh recent polls show that she could do potentially better than Joe Biden if she were facing uh Donald Trump and that would also be the easiest way to go about replacing uh Joe Biden because put aside the political nightmare that it would be to replace Joe Biden uh right now then there is the logistic nightmare of picking a a new nominee if you will and the reason why kamla Harris is easier is for that reason for the logistical reason there is uh the idea of the brokered convention coming up in August if uh Joe Biden is not the nominee uh there are ways of uh choosing another nominee but it would be very complicated the second thing and it’s very important in US politics who gets the money Joe Biden’s ticket right now has about 90 million in its War chest and technically and very easily if kamla Harris were to take over for Joe Biden she’s already on the ticket it is a ticket that has her name on it she very easily will inherit that money and can use it if she remains VP with somebody else at the top of the ticket or if the ticket is completely different things get way more complicated and that person would likely have to start fundraising basically from scratch and with 4 months left that is is very very complicated and then there’s the question of getting on the ballot for the general election in time uh most of the certification deadlines are uh in late August after the official Convention of the democratic party but there are a couple of States including Ohio that requires to certify the presidential ticket uh as early as August 7th and that’s why you’re seeing the Democratic National Committee saying they’re actually going to do a virtual convention so we’re talking about the convention in August mid August it’s actually going to be done before that they’re probably going to do it at the end of July virtually in order to be ready and have it certified the ticket certified to be on the ballot in Ohio by that deadline of August 7 so I’m getting into the nitty-gritty of things just to show how complicated it would be if Joe Biden doesn’t step down in the next few days to come up with somebody else the easiest of the hard op would be the vice president k Harris

Some elected Democrats loyal to President Joe Biden raised fresh questions on Tuesday about his 2024 re-election bid, with one calling for him to step aside, a shift after many defended him in the wake of last week’s shaky debate performance.
