Ukraine vows to retaliate after Russia targeted a children’s hospital in the capital Kyiv | ABC News

Ukrainian President Vladimir zalinski says his country will retaliate after Russian missile attacks killed at least 41 people across Ukraine and damaged a children’s hospital Russia has denied attacking the hospital and says its strikes hit military targets as world leaders prepare to head to a NATO Summit Mr zalinsky is calling for a firm response from Ukraine’s allies and Yuri sack is an adviser to the Ukrainian minister of strategic Industries and he joins us now from ke Yuri sack welcome so describe for us what it was like yesterday morning with these missiles hitting the city good day Joe it was hell it was um you know even for us it’s been two and a half years of this offer War but um we were all sh Shell Shocked um I went to actually the scene of uh the destruction of this Children’s Hospital um 30 minutes after it happened as soon as I could and to see this with your own eyes uh and to understand that under that Rubble there could still and there were still people and uh to see how ordinary ke citizens just kind pouring and started to help the military and the emergency services to you know Brick by Brick to uh clear the rubble it was uh heartbreaking but uh anyone who was there and anyone who saw that on TV or anywhere on the news in Ukraine um you know we we just get more Angry we we get more determined because you know we’re dealing with a terrorist State a terrorist state which while it is trying to sort of convince the world that it is seeking peace at the same time with its both hands it’s loading up weapons missiles on the planes that are killing our children are innocent people and mind you this Children’s Hospital was not the only scene of Destruction because there was another maternity Clinic that was hit in Kev and seven people were killed there so uh yesterday was an very very awful day for all of Ukraine and and today is the day of morning of course and uh we are still clearing the rubble because the death toall is still uh can still go up yeah we so we just got some live pictures up now I think this is from the scene of that Children’s Hospital still and yeah it was just heartbreaking to see those images of the the kids that cancer patient there um coming out Wheeling uh what they had to uh to continue to survive as they got away from the bombing uh but yeah as you point out so many people turning out civilians there to take away things Brick by Brick um and it’s because it continues to be dangerous because there have been instances where the Russians have hit spots again soon after strikes well absolutely actually yesterday was uh just such a case because well they they didn’t hit the same children’s hospital but after the first wave of the missile uh attack there was another one and actually it it was the second missile attack that resulted in the destruction of that Maternity Ward where seven people were killed so you know they they are terrorist they use terrorist tactics and it is baffling for us to see how you know on the same day for example when this tragedy happens in Ukraine tragedy which cannot be interpreted there’s no black and white right it’s it’s it’s mass murder it’s genocide and then there are leaders of large countries you know giving hugs to this terrorist this war criminal in the Kremlin I mean it’s just absolutely mind-boggling yeah that Children’s Hospital is the main spot that we’ve seen do you know how many people died there well it’s still not clear but uh minimum four are confirmed uh last night uh you know our uh representatives of our government reported that uh late in the evening um a body of a woman and two children would taken from underneath the rubble a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy uh and like you said this you know they’ve hit where the part of the hospital where cancer children you know were going through treatments such as dialysis uh life- saving treatment and and now uh um the hospital is ruined there people who have been killed and you know um we just keep repeating to our partners give us more air defense systems and give us the permission to strike Russia deeper into their territory because that’s the only possible efficient way for us to stop these attacks from happening in the future their planes every single one of those planes that launched those missiles at KY of and other Ukrainian cities yesterday they take off from deep inside Russia they launch these missile they kill Ukrainian civilians and they go and have a cup of coffee now that has to stop if we are given the permission to strike deeper inside Russia territory we will be able to Target their airfields and we will make it impossible for these planes to even take off and who do you have to get that permission from primarily from the United States of America and uh what’s been the response so far so far uh Unfortunately they they they yesterday have said that you know they’ve uh given us permission to use their longrange missiles uh not far from the uh Ukrainian border with Russia uh in particular near the khif region which was and continues to be on a daily basis uh the target of um incessant bombings but at the same time uh the White House has still not uh changed their mind in terms of allowing Ukraine to strike deeper into the Russian territory and this is exactly what we need now look when our president zilinsky when he said says that we will retaliate with Force I would like to make it clear now we are not attacking uh civilian objects right we are not these terrorist we’re not like these depraved uh war criminals who are going to retaliate by killing civilians on the other side we will strike their military objects we will strike their airfields their bombers their army not civilians so this is why you know under international law uh we are entitled to our right to self-defense and we hope that the White House will change their uh mind and we hope that we will get that permission and we will be able to protect our children and families and you know cancer uh patients now there was a period where there seemed to be a bit of a stalemate in terms of where the front line was uh Ukraine had pushed Russia back and there was a bit of a stal at it seemed like the Ukrainian borders apart from around some regions in the East were basically holding firm but uh have the Russian recently made advances to the north of hak into Ukrainian territory Joey the the front line actually may seem as uh sort of stable but in reality uh the fighting in the east of Ukraine is really really Fierce and intense uh we our armed forces are holding on they’re pushing the enemy back the enemy is trying to break through our defense lines uh to no success uh but of course on Sundays they gain uh insignificant incremental um you know territory but at the same time at the same time uh they continue to do what they you know what they’ve been doing all the while the meat grinder tactics the amount of soldiers that they are willing to send to their certain death is staggering it’s counted by tens of thousands and the amount of um their artillery and tanks and and uh armored personnel vehicles that we destroying on a daily basis is also staggering but it’s they’re getting smarter they’re getting stronger and and it’s it’s it’s a very difficult fight and so after 2 years we keep on hearing seeing these stories of the resilience of the Ukrainian people uh Yuri I’ve spoken to you a number of times over the past couple of years do you how how do you feel now about the capacity for Ukraine to push Russia out once and for all Jo I am so proud of my people because sometimes I just think that all ukrainians are super humans right now we’re living on a daily basis we get like 6 hours of electricity a day we get air rate Sirens four to five times a day in in every part of Ukraine uh and we are still standing and we are still determined and we will continue until we reach the just peace and just peace means no war criminals no Russian terrorists on our our land it means reparations it means stable and peaceful Ukraine we understand that it’s not an easy process but we are you know an army of our diplomats are working on the international Arena on a daily basis and just today a NATO Summit is beginning uh in Washington DC the uh 75th anniversary of NATO will be celebrated and we hope and we are confident that Ukraine will will be high on the NATO alliance’s agenda we we are confident that we will get more support because everybody understands Russia Must Be Stopped we cannot allow Russia to uh ruin the world rules-based order and and terrify and terrorize the planet with you know missiles nuclear strikes and and all of that so we have to stay strong ukrainians are strong we continue to be resilient and we encourage our partners to keep supporting us yeah you’ve mentioned the need for to get that permission from the US to fire deeper into Russian territory to stop these missile attacks for a period Ukraine was uh seem to be really concerned about the supply of Munitions from uh allies around the world what apart from wanting that permission from the US to shoot deeper into Russian territory what how are you going at the moment with your military hardware and Munitions since uh the supplemental support bill was passed by the US Congress of course uh the situation has already changed uh more in favor of Ukraine we’re still not on par with the Russians when it comes to artillery um but at the same time the ratio has uh changed so we have more ammunition now uh we have more means to strike back I would also like to stress that all this time Ukraine has been working very hard to build up and uh our own defense industry base so we are now building you know making our own ammunition we are making our own artillery pieces uh and actually we’re setting up joint ventures with uh Global weapons manufacturers here in Ukraine at the time of War so and we encourage of course uh other countries to participate in a project which we called uh spr manufacturing freedom because uh Joey Ukrainian we have been so successful in rebuilding our defense industry base we are capable of producing three times more weapons than the Ukrainian government can actually buy from the Ukrainian manufacturers this is why we appeal to foreign countries you know if you want to buy weapons to send them to the Ukrainian Army buy them from our own manufacturers I mean the Netherlands have done that already the Canada Denmark uh the US is about to set up a fund so we uh I would like to use this opportunity to appeal to the government of Australia as well participate in the manufacturing Freedom project buy Ukrainian weapons for the Ukrainian Army from the Ukrainian manufacturers this will be a very good contribution towards stable peace and uh Prosper you know uh secure Europe you’ve already mentioned how how important the US is in all of this uh there’s a presidential election coming up in four or five months uh how do you feel about the the chance of a a trump presidency and what he’s had to say about solving uh the situation in Ukraine we are sacrificing now our lives uh for democracy and freedom because we believe in democracy and freedom and so no matter what who will be the resident of the White House following the elections we are confident that you know us is a country where Democratic processes work well and uh whoever is the next president of the United States of America they will for sure understand that standing with Ukraine continuing to support Ukraine is in the National interest of the United States of America because if Ukraine doesn’t succeed God forbid and we will do all we can and all we have to to not allow that to happen but you know Russia will not stop in Ukraine uh Russia is not about peace Russia wants to destroy Ukraine and then move on to Europe to the Baltic states Poland they want to dismantle the world order as we know it right and it is in the interest of the United States of America whoever is the president of uh their country to continue to support Ukraine because otherwise the world will descend into chaos and that’s not in anybody’s interests okay Yuri sack thanks so much for talking to us from Ukraine and stay safe thank you thank you Joey
