Harry is the divisive duke – and Meghan is making jam. Can the Sussexes escape their ‘flop era’?

  1. I think the title’s a little harsh (the Guardian is officially republican, but has been sympathetic to the Sussexes in the past), but think there’s two interesting threads for discussion:

    1. The Pat Tillman Award – I had assumed this was basically another award on the lines of Harry’s previous aviation win, and am a bit surprised at the backlash. Obviously, it’s not a great look for Tillman’s mother to be directly criticising you as unsuitable. Perhaps some Americans can chime in if they know more – is Harry/Invictus markedly different from previous winners?

    2. ARO – we’re into July now, after ARO was said to be launching in the spring. I think this has got the potential to be quite successful for Meghan, but it depends where she wants to take it. Do we think the brand’s been delayed for some unknown reason, or if she’s readying a different sort of product?

  2. The Sussexes relaunch and rebrand like twice a year, it feels like.

They need to pick something. One thing. And then put all their effort and energy into that one thing and making that one thing a huge success. Then they can build from that. Currently they’re half-assing (or quarter-assing, honestly) a bunch of stuff and it comes off as aimless and like they’re not doing much of anything.

So CAN they escape their flop era? Yeah, I think they can, theoretically. Will they? Probably not.

  3. Harry and meghan stuffed up beyond the realms of incompetence. They had all the glamour and popular appeal to completely outshine William and Kate if that’s what they wanted, simply by going out and working. Instead they had to whine and bleat and ended up making right twits of themselves

  4. I think the only way out of their flop era is to have a hit that doesn’t rely solely on dishing about the Royal family. The Netflix lifestyle show needs to be a success and ARO needs to release a product first sale.

  5. Honestly it’s not easy to leave your family behind but I think ‘flop era’ is a bit harsh. The level of hate they get is absurd.

  6. Turns out when you make your brand BURN IT ALL DOWN you’re left with nothing . ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  7. I wonder if it is time to stop rehashing their past? I know I will get downvoted but I’m genuinely interested in current events with royals. The Sussex news is so old, it belongs in a dusty attic or better yet, on a bonfire 🔥
