> raising the minimum wage
• price controls on essential foods, electricity, gas and petrol
• lowering the retirement age to 60
• a new 90% tax on any annual income above €400,000 (£337,954)
• heavy investment in green transition and public services
Absolutely, lead the way 👏
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://news.sky.com/story/amp/the-left-wing-french-coalition-hoping-to-raise-minimum-wage-and-slap-price-controls-on-petrol-13175395) reduced by 72%. (I’m a bot)

> France's left wing New Popular Front – now the largest group in parliament – has called for a prime minister who will implement its ideas including a new wealth tax and petrol price controls.
> France Unbowed's leader Jean-Luc Melenchon has been labelled a firebrand, the most divisive figure in French politics and France's Jeremy Corbyn.
> It is possible that President Macron – who called the snap election in a bid to counter the rise of the far-right – could seek a deal with more moderate elements of the NFP. He has ruled out working with Melenchon's France Unbowed party, but he could stretch out a hand to other parties in the NPF – the Socialists and the Greens.

Honestly, the number of people who don’t know how a progressive tax system works is fucking wild.
Already I see lots of fight about to start in parliament over taxes.
I don’t know if that’s a sensationalist headline, but taxing rich people this disproportionately seems like an incentive for nobody to become rich.
I’m all for taxing the rich, but this seems absurd. You can’t tax them anything if they leave the EU.
I wonder if it works without closing all the tax loopholes the rich can use to reduce their earnings on paper
Would rather see that related to the minimum or median wage instead of a fixed amount. Have that tax rate start at lets say 10 times minimum wage (for 40 hours per week). Gives the rich an incentive to constantly push for an increase in wages for everyone
I could see 70%, maybe, but 90%? That’s just dead on arrival.
Doing so at 400k/yr is even more absurd, I could at least understand it passed 1 million/yr or so. 90% at 400k/yr just seems to put an artificial cap on upward mobility, imo.
Gotta implement the exit tax in the same bill, otherwise most money will just leave the country
The left is ridiculous, they do not have a majority. Ensemble will not agree to this, luckily, and I doubt its constitutional
Good Luck. The rich will just move. Multiple countries in Europe have already tried this tack, and just end up with a worse tax base than before. The rich are mobile, and plenty of countries will let them buy citizenship to avoid taxes.
The people who write headlines (including this topic) are I think either intentionally dishonest or simply don’t understand how tax works.
“a new 90% tax on any annual income above €400,000 (£337,954)”
The other thing people forget is that the wealthy use any number of legal (and questionable) methods to reduce their tax bill.
The other thing people forget is that an intention without a majority equals not going to happen.
That is typical of leftist, either our idea must be implemented or we let the nazi rule. The same happened before WWII ….
They tried that a while ago. Mass exit of businesses. It’s not especially difficult to move to another European country.
Again with this. The tax is not “on the rich”. It’s a 90% tax rate on income over 400000€. If you don’t know the difference between the two you should try and find out what the latter means and why it doesn’t really work.
God, I genuinely hope this happens. That’s what the french people voted for, after all.
Ah people who want to be in power but have zero clue on how to run something. ‘Tax the rich, that will fix everything’
French here, the NFP has the relative majority but a coalition of the Center and the moderate Right could have more seats, so basically nobody know how it will be dealt. Moreover some measures announced by NFP as doable by ministerial decrees are in fact not and require “real laws”. Source : fact checking from many french newspapers
Well done France. You gave up yourself to extreme left for fear of the right. Now those extreme leftists will destroy your country and it will be up to the rightist to clean it up. Ask Argentina
Didn’t Hollande try this years ago? Didn’t it fail to raise any significant money? Didn’t Macron help kill this years ago because of that? Why would this work any better than it did 9 years ago, and why would Macron’s party support this any more than he did 9 years ago?
Well, right wingers will get even more votes when they don’t deliver on this and on lowering retirement age to 60yo
These dumb shits don’t understand that you tax someone that much they simply leave and you can wave your entire tax base goodbye permanently , unless you start keeping citizens against their will as well.
I love how everyone here is talking about billionaires when the tax is actually applied on income over 400k/yr
President Hollander introduced a 75% tax a decade ago that was later reversed. It didn’t raise as much money as expected and in a number of cases, wealthy individuals affected by the tax left the country.

A 90% tax on income over €400,000 is insane. That’s an end of career hard worked for position in most cases.
Bear in mind, that €400,000 is **pre-tax**, they will already be paying a significant chunk of that to the tax man.
Guys, I am not into finance. Can anybody explain to me if it means what I think it means?
(If you earn a salary of $1M, you would get taxied for $900K)
At this point just take all of their money and that’s it. Fucking commies
Confiscatory taxation actually ends up generating less revenue, according to the OECD. People will leave the country rather than suffer legalised theft.
French football clubs going to start hurting for players/money. All of a sudden to keep their players on x after tax they will have to pay a lot more to the government.
I’m all for taxing the rich, but that’s too extreme.
French person here – President Holland tried this a couple of years ago with a 75% tax I believe for anyone with an income of 1million euros or more. This lead to many rich people, investors, business owners and celebrities fleeing the country and changing their nationalities. He ended up having to drop it due to the mess it caused.
I’m for taxes to support the social state and services but this extreme strategy does not work and hurts everyone in the country.
seems a bit too high
So rich leave how does these French expect the new “french” millions of migrants that are on social support to not ruin the government
I’m guessing that when tax is way >50%, money will find another way to target. Especially when the target is wealthy and knows how to walk the walk…
France needs a Pinochet
