Another one bites the dust. What’s the total up to now not running next election?
A major lost to Irish politics. He was one of the better ones in fairness.
Can’t say I’d blame him.
The toxicity involved in being a TD at the moment is so unpalatable. It bodes poorly for all of us, especially when the most competent representatives are looking for an exit (by all accounts, Coveney was well capable)
The best Taoiseach we never had.
To be expected. A smart guy, who will be missed.
He pretty much inherited the seat didn’t he?
What was the story with his father again?
Built a good reputation during brexit only to shit it away on Zapponegate…I’ll never understand that. FG will probably be sorry over the long term he didn’t get made leader instead of Leo.
^^^🧂
Will he take over his brother’s rte role?
I don’t blame him. Not really worth when there’s a good chance you’re going to have loonies “protesting” outside your house and intimidating your family.
All these retirement could be good for FG.
Allows the party to age down and drop weight attached to these names
Despite all the snark here he played a blinder on Brexit. We essentially got all we asked for.
He could have been a major figure in the EU if he wanted. Big loss for Ireland. Some comments here are typical snarky bollocks more suited to the Journal.
At least with regards to Irish interests for Brexit and for nationalists up north he did a great job and we “won” the negotiations. As far as it can be “won”
Another useless cunt we can be rid of.
107k a year retirement for life
Rumour has it he took a big job with Google, no doubt lined up when he was in power through connections.
Cute fecker.
Another politician with gravitas and intelligence gone. It’s a terrible life.
He’d have been astronomically better as Taoiseach than our current lightweight
Get fucked Simon, sack of shit. I’m not even saying this in an anti-FFG way, I have literal personal interactions with this cunt and he can get fucked.

The government lackeys are out in force, what was so brilliant about him? Can’t think of anything he achieved except get his brother and zappone made up jobs.
Seems like a lot of people are just making the calculation that is not worth being in public life.
I’m personally aware of a few people who used to be involved in local politics in various parties, and they’ve just given up on it largely because of being hounded on social media and also because their partners and kids were being hassled.
There’s no real protection at all from it either. The Gardai are as useless as an under water hairdryer and are receiving similar abuse themselves and can’t even deal with that.
Irish politics has become very ugly in the last few years on the outer fringes. It’s very much about kicking the player rather than ball now and we’ve seen the same crap that’s wrecked the US and the UK being imported via social media and applied here.
I thought Coveney was great for Ireland on Brexit,. I’m not a fan of Fine Gael, but I do think Coveney is a great statesman.
Why would he? He can go swanning about in his fleet of yachts.

Its not taking the money and running if he stays in the job.
He was fairly uncontroversial apart from that Zappone affair. Very bad judgement on that one, otherwise he did warrant a lot of respect.
Anyone else think he is extremely sexy?
