  1. Should have read the T&Cs I suppose. Maybe write in to the consumer champions column in the Guardian, see if they can get Rwanda’s press office to do anything.

  2. Maybe some of the Tory faithful should stump up the bill and pay back the taxpayer for their stupid ideas!!!!

  3. Well in that case we should get our money’s worth and deport Suella Braverman

  4. Ragebait article. Since we cancelled, we won’t get a refund for money already paid.

  5. I don’t really see why they should, they didn’t pull out of the agreement, its not there fault we had an incompetent government.

  6. Outrageous! We should send the bill to Rishi Sunak and follow-up with debt collectors

  7. lol of course not.

And it’s our own ineptitude that’s the issue.

  8. Send the bailiffs around to Sunak’s mansion for the debt. After all,he can now afford Sky TV.

  9. Do we own the accommodation that was built to house them?

  10. and that ladies and gentlemen is how you launder money.

  11. Someone tell me which magic tree the tories found this £270m in the first place…

  12. So, with his writing off all those loans for PPE as Chancellor during Covid, what’s Sunak’s tally on wasted money now?

(And to any Conservative reading this, we all know you’ll want to make some comment about Labour)

  13. Could Rwanda send us some shitty out of date PPE as compensation? This is about three Mone’s worth I reckon.

  14. Imagine how many wells they could build with all that moolah? Maybe we’ll finally stop seeing guilt inducing water aid ads on itv4

  15. For the record the UK never asked for a refund; it’s in the agreement that we would not be eligible for one.

A journalist went and asked and has made a news headline that makes the UK look like we’ve gone, tail between our legs, asking for a takesy-backsie when that simply isn’t the case.

  16. Obviously? It sucks but the whole fucking idea was stupid. Better to nope out now as opposed to dig deeper into the sunk cost fallacy. Good thing we got that 350m we used to send to the EU I guess…?

It’s something of a bitter irony that you probably would have had better immigration control under Labour than Cons or Reform. It takes more than the willingness to do something, you also need the competency to get it done. Competency is unfortunately a rare commodity in our right wing parties.

  17. Yet again our government spunking away millions in corrupt schemes. How many years did they get away with this? Oh but its the immigrants that are why we are soo fucked. My hope is getting independence and getting away from this madness

  18. As expected. Will the new government launch an investigation into this, yet another, waste of money?

  19. While I don’t think they should pay it back as they weren’t the ones to break the agreement; I swear I saw news reports months ago that said they said they’d give it back if the scheme didn’t go ahead.

  20. I didn’t know that government contracts didn’t come with a returns policy.

  21. Wow, nobody saw that coming. Another 1/4£Bn pissed up the wall.

  22. Did anyone honestly expect they would? They’re still laughing at us – much like the rest of the world.

  23. I guess we can add that to the other £131bn they spaffed up the wall.

    So glad they have gone.

  24. Sniff sniff….. anyone smell oil?

    Freedom train roll out!

  25. Fair play to them, they didn’t fuck us about or anything

  26. Forget about this it’s a distraction, concentrate on what the new government is doing keeping it’s promises? Not what could have should have happened.

  27. Couldn’t they just tell the bank and have them recall the bacs payment tell them we didn’t sign up to that service /s 😂

  28. never fear the £350m per week saved from brexit will cover it

  29. I bet some of that money has landed in the tories personal pockets somehow

  30. Seems fair, we pulled out of it and they got some nice buildings and infrastructure. We should probably stop giving them foreign aid though. We’ve given them a billion in the last 20ish years on top of the scheme.

  31. UK

“So that money I lent you last week”

    “What money?”

Rwanda – While decked out in Prada

  32. What a waste of five (or eight) years we’ve had. Stupid policies that were never going to work whose only purpose was to satisfy uncle dickheads who watch GB News and haven’t worked since 2002.

  33. The Tories have learned absolutely nothing if they give her a shot at becoming leader.

Yes it will delite the far right wing nut jobs who vote for those like her in the party. But her vitriol won’t endear her to the more sane people in the Tories and across the country.

The Rwanda policy was a white elephant. Absolute waste of money from day one. When more people come over in a day than the entire agreement can cope with. You know it’s bollocks.

  34. And why should they. It’s our government that screwed up. Rwanda did their bit. They’re being scapegoated for our failed policies.

  35. Well of course they won’t. Why should they, unless it was in a contract?

  36. If it was the other way round would we give them a refund? Can’t really blame them.

  37. Of course they won’t that money has already been redirected by corruption. They won’t have it it pay back.

  38. Why should they? It’s not their fault we are dominated by a liberal elite.

  39. A worry I have is that the Tories lowered the bar SO FAR and were SO shambolic that they can no longer function as a competent opposition.

Hard to criticize somebodys cooking when you shat in the slow cooker, pissed in the oven and then burned the whole house down last time you tried to make dinner.

  40. Could we not just use the accommodation for holidays? I would go

  41. The Tories wasted £270,000,000 of tax money on a back of a napkin scheme that was never going to work.

How much have Labour saved us by cancelling it now?
