Police say children as young as six were involved in disorder in the Creggan area of Londonderry.
Petrol bombs, masonry and fireworks were thrown at officers during a security alert in Southway on Tuesday night.
It began after police attending a sudden death in nearby Magowan Park found a suspect device, which was later declared an elaborate hoax.
Derry’s top police officer Ch Supt Gillian Kearney described the trouble as “senseless”.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour.
“That disorder occurred as officers were dealing with such a sensitive incident is shameful,” Ch Supt Kearney said.
"There are reports of children as young as six and seven years old being involved.
"This is child criminal exploitation.
"It also serves to damage local communities and divert our resources away from dealing with the things that matter most".
Those involved left the area at around midnight, police said.
There are no reports of injuries some police vehicles were damaged.
'Anger in the local community'
Ch Supt Kearney said officers would not be deterred from carrying out their duties.
“We know from the work our officers do on a daily basis, what happened last night will have provoked anger in the local community and wider area,” she said.
"I want to reassure the community my officers will be out today working to remove drugs from the streets, responding to domestic abuse calls and protecting communities from those who seek to cause harm to the most vulnerable”.
Police have asked for anyone with information to come forward.

Must be some craic being a parent. Can’t be arsed with them? Get them out rioting, soon tire them out. No school to hand them off to now, must be realising what we shites they’ve reared.
Brutal, these children grow up thinking this is great craic and normal behaviour. Not realising the damage it does to their own community and their lives. And it’s sad, some of the parents let it happen.

Not saying the wee wains aren’t scrotes, but what’s the point in the police still being in the area after the incident the police were originally there for is resolved?
The wains will go home when you drive away.
Take the kids and put them in youth jails and let them cry their wee eyes out. That will soon put a stop to it.
I really don’t give a fuck if you’re a 6 year old. If you’re throwing rocks and petrol bombs at people you need to realise that’s not going to go well for you.
Actually, this does make me sad. What hope for these youngsters. It summer they’re probably bored to the knackers. Are there any community activities other than attacking the police, arranged for them. Remember when summer clubs were a thing, get the funds out for them, Michelle and Emma.

Catholic kids attacking a heavily-armed paramilitary force ensconced in their Troubles-era armoured vehicles, shocking stuff.
At least they’re not throwing paint bombs and petrol bombs at the homes of disabled children or African families like Loyalists do.
And then these kids will pass their awful upbringing into their own children when they have them… in about 10 years.

Hatred is passed along. These kids are probably doing no different to what their mum/dad/ grandparent did before them. The police/state are their enemy & they have a lack of breeding and awareness to know any better. It has been this way for decades, tearing up & holding their own communities to hostage. It’ll never change, particularly when our main politicians still glorify the past & its murderers 🤷. What do we expect??
I had a mate, let’s call him, “Darren Kensington”, for the sake of argument. But Darren was always up to no good from thon age. His ma and da were no different, let’s call them, “Grant and Jennifer Kensington”, for the sake of argument.
