It’s another part of something I’ve come to understand only this year in university how indeed Italy and Hungary have a closed bond. And it hasn’t anything to do with the actual government in Italy (as many would legitimately see in this statistics) but has to do with history
I’ve learnt in university, among other things:
– Hungary converted to Catholicism rather than Orthodoxy because of the closeness with the Pope, and the bonds between the two countries in the renaissance period and even after are too many to be listed
– Italian is the *fourth* most spoken language in Hungary above for example french and even German (source: https://www.illibraio.it/news/storie/ungheresi-lingua-italiana-497890/)
– Hungary has many of the so called “Italian institutes of culture”, along as some scholastic institutions like the Szent László Gimnázium that is one of the most recognised high schools in Hungary and follows the typical structure of Italian high school education
– There is a *huge” festival of Italian culture each year in Hungary (https://iicbudapest.esteri.it/it/gli_eventi/calendario/festival-ditaliano-2024/) both in Budapest and in Debrecen
– There are many collaborations between universities, especially Rome where one can graduate as a Hungarian Language and Literature major
I find that’s interesting, or at least I think it is because I’m fascinated with Hungarian language and culture (not politics obviously but this doesn’t matter in this peculiar list of things)
Why Finland fifth, not number one?
When I saw Poland not being number 1, I saw blasphemy.
I would like to have a friendly talk with the participants of the survey.

My sister with kids took refuge in the Hungary when invasion just started, spent a year there, had only positive things to say about people, especially how supportive they were.
Hardly any surprises. Italians are top3 in most of these lists, i swear making pizza and pasta was the best PR move ever. Austria-Hungary of course and Polish-Hungarian bromance where you are taught from the birth that we like each other a lot.

I read a comment on why it seems we’re so high up there and it was pretty enlightening. I didn’t know anything about it. Tbf apart from the government I think most of my friends either already went or want to go visit the country, so I can say Italians like Hungary too. Orban ≠ Hungary. I’ve always had a pretty positive image of it myself. And our flags are similar!

I just do not understand why the populist right in many countries practically forces pro-Russian thinking on its own voters despite the great friction to achieve it. Sure, it is corruption, but many of these people could easily win in many countries without this aspect of their politics. And then they could gain riches in other ways if that was the only motivating factor. I truly believe Le Pen would have won without her Russian link, for example.
Every post like this keeps me thinking if I should stop learning Hungarian. Why bother integrating into a culture that hates you?
Hungarians are obsessed with and adore russians. Budapest is a western version of moscow. Literally almost any cultural norm or lifestyle is much more similar to russians.
18% of Hungarians still haven’t got over Slovak independence. I’m almost impressed.

When was the last time liking Austrians have turned out well for Hungary?
Fidesz voters don’t even know anything about the people of other nations. That’s why their opinions are so neutral. Maybe they know the guy who works in the chinese shop or in the kebab restaurant. They don’t travel, don’t speak languages and don’t live in big cities with tourism.
Austria? I fully thought you hated us, whenever I see or hear Hungarians talking about Austria it’s negative
