  1. Wait, so if you inherit gran’s derelict cottage in Kil Nowhere, Co Clare, that hasn’t been occupied since 1985 with its photographs of Padre Pio, JFK and Pope JP II, there’s a levy?

edit — So there’s a bunch of people here who haven’t been west of Dublin for a long time, I think. There’s loads of places in the middle of nowhere with no septic or water to speak of, no electrics, These are exempt from the VHT. Thanks to the people who helpfully posted accurate information or links.

  2. It’s a bit ridiculous expecting people of derelict properties to pay levies.

  3. The levy accrued can be used to lower the value of the site for a cpo and used to write off legal costs. After 15 years, the council gets the property for free…

  4. Urban areas. This is not a levy on a derelict cottage at the top of a mountain. It’s for urban areas.

  5. All derelict property in Dublin should be expropriated and used to build housing.

  6. Yeah that vacant home tax is frankly a joke and i doubt anyone is paying it

  7. If you don’t claim it you lose it.

If you claim it you have to pay for it.

Sadly wouldn’t work no one wants to enforce it.

  8. The stock photo depicts a property that would not come under these levies.
